‘SWAT’ Spinoff Starring Shemar Moore Greenlit at Sony Pictures TV

The team responsible for creating SWAT, along with the main actor, are attempting another effort to sustain the series.

Sony Pictures Television has given the go-ahead for a spin-off of the crime drama known as SWAT Exiles. Similar to the recently concluded CBS show, this new series will see Shemar Moore reprise his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, working alongside a group of fresh recruits. Sony plans to distribute the series globally and will soon approach potential buyers with it.

The studio made the announcement Sunday evening at its annual L.A. Screenings event.

Sony Pictures TV chairman, Keith Le Goy, expressed excitement about launching a new chapter for this cherished series with ‘SWAT Exiles.’ We firmly stand by our commitment to bringing compelling narratives to life and trust our team’s skill in crafting and delivering these stories globally. This dedication is at the heart of every choice we make.

Jason Ning, who is associated with The Brothers Sun and Mrs. Davis, has been appointed as the showrunner for the spinoff series, following a fresh overall agreement with Sony. Notably, Ning is also involved in Sony’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon series, currently being developed for Amazon Prime Video alongside Ron Moore. In SWAT Exiles, Jason will collaborate with Shemar Moore, Neal H. Moritz, and Pavun Shetty from Original Film, as well as James Scura, who are executive producers of the original SWAT series.

Ning expressed nothing but excitement about teaming up with Sony to develop ‘SWAT Exiles.’ It’s a tremendous privilege to continue the beloved tradition of this show. Collaborating with Shemar Moore, who embodies the essence of a leading actor, and creating fresh characters for a new era is a dream come true,” said Ning.

I’m thrilled to share that Sony is planning to produce 10 episodes of the exciting new series, “Exiles.” Development is currently underway, and if all goes as planned, we’ll start filming in the summer here in sunny Los Angeles! This spinoff promises to retain around 200 talented individuals from the LA-based crew of “SWAT,” ensuring a continuation of top-notch production quality. Can’t wait to see this project come to life!

Over the past eight seasons on ‘SWAT’, my time there has been extraordinary and unforgettable. We captivated audiences globally, surpassed expectations, rose from the ashes twice, and continued to captivate fans and families around the world,” said Moore. “I am thrilled for this upcoming generation and new version of ‘SWAT’ under Sony. [Sony Pictures TV Studios president] Katherine Pope, Neal H. Moritz, Jason Ning, and I will ensure that the franchise, adrenaline-pumping action, emotional drama, and storytelling of ‘SWAT’ continue to thrive.

Pope expressed, “We’re thrilled beyond words to start the new story of SWAT, making it a reality for not only the devoted followers of the initial series but also for a fresh group of spectators. We’re indebted to our amazing collaborators Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Jason Ning, and Shemar Moore for joining us on this adventure. Their dedication to the worldwide fanbase, to our cherished team, and to our city is profound.

The news about the spinoff emerges merely two days following the wrap-up of SWAT after an eight-season run on CBS. Interestingly, the network initially ended the series post its sixth season in 2023, but later decided to renew SWAT for what was advertised as its seventh and final season. Surprisingly, CBS altered their decision once more and commissioned a ninth season before cancelling the show again in March. Previously, seasons one through seven of SWAT were available on Netflix, while the recently concluded ninth season is accessible on Paramount+, CBS’s sister streaming platform.

In Sony’s explanation of SWAT Exiles, we find that after a mission goes awry, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson is compelled out of retirement for one final assignment. This involves heading up an experimental SWAT team composed of raw, unpredictable newcomers. Hondo faces the challenge of connecting with the younger generation, managing diverse personalities, and transforming a group of misfits into a unit that can safeguard the city and preserve the program that molded him into who he is today.

Following CBS’s cancellation of “SWAT” in March, Moore expressed his reluctance to part ways with the show on an Instagram video and hinted at possible new networks for the series by saying, “Hey, Netflix, what’s up?”, indicating a potential interest. Addressing other networks such as NBC, Fox, and ABC, he extended invitations: “You’re invited to our barbecue! Choose your favorite restaurant, I’ll cover the bill.
