David Lim, a key figure on the SWAT series, has expressed his thoughts publicly, as a spin-off of the show was approved featuring only Shemar Moore, following the termination of the original program.
For eight seasons, spanning from 2017 to 2025, the actor portrayed Victor Tan, working alongside Moore’s character, Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.
He expressed in an Instagram post on Wednesday that it was painful to see the release of the spinoff without acknowledgement of the original cast who contributed significantly to S.W.A.T., especially since the announcement came only two days after our series finale. After eight outstanding seasons, it seemed we were overlooked during a time when there could have been appreciation and recognition for those who created this show, as well as for its profound influence on viewers.
I’m thrilled to share some exciting news, straight from my gaming chair! Sony Pictures Television recently gave the go-ahead for a spinoff series of the crime procedural I love, SWAT Exiles. In this new adventure, I’ll be stepping back into the shoes of my favorite character, working alongside a fresh team of young recruits. Can’t wait to dive in!
Shortly following this, Moore spoke about the ‘Exiles’ continuing forward without their previous colleagues, expressing, “Change may not be welcomed by all, but it is essential for growth. Progress cannot be made without facing challenges.
As a devoted SWAT fan myself, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of admiration when Shemar Moore shared his heartfelt sentiments for his former castmates in an Instagram video. He likened himself to the legendary quarterback, Tom Brady, in the world of football, essentially claiming the title of “Tom Brady of SWAT.” He further elaborated, “They’re my family for life. Just like in sports, a player might get traded, but the team keeps going with their star player, and I’m that guy. I’m so proud, so grateful. I won’t apologize for anything. After 31 years of hard work, I’m thrilled about what lies ahead. Excited that SWAT gets to keep playing ball.
In his social media update, Lim referred to being part of SWAT as one of the most significant accolades in his life. He put every ounce of emotion into portraying Tan, and beyond that, he treasured the camaraderie and bonds formed both on and off set with the team.
What truly set S.W.A.T. apart wasn’t just the action, or any individual character. It was the team – the bond, the camaraderie. The blood, sweat, tears, and laughter we shared in every episode were not mere aspects, but a genuine chemistry that was evident from the very first day of our pilot. This effortless connection continued through all 8 seasons.
He went on to say, “I’m proud of how hard we fought for a ninth season. We felt we still had more to offer, more stories to tell. It was for our crew, for each other, and for the newcomers who were joining us. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be for all of us – but that’s alright. We had an incredible run, and we ended on a high note with those final two episodes.
The police series SWAT brought down the curtain on its eighth and last season with its finale titled “Return to Base” on May 16. Earlier, it had been axed after its sixth season in 2023, but was reinstated twice more, before CBS made the decision to cancel it for a second time in March.
