Switch 2 is official and we’re getting a Nintendo Direct about it

Following years of eager fan requests and numerous leaks, it’s confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released this year. Most leaked information about the console has been validated, including the magnetic joy-cons and backwards compatibility with games. To top it all off, a Direct event for the console has been scheduled for April, further fueling fan excitement.

It’s been anticipated by many sources that the upcoming system from Nintendo would be unveiled today, and indeed, they released a new trailer showcasing the console. The new model is expected to be larger than the initial Switch, featuring enlarged joy-cons, although details about whether it will utilize hall effect technology are still unclear.

Fortunately, the trailer for the new Switch 2 model clearly demonstrates extensive backward compatibility. Not only does it depict gameplay of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but a convenient chart at the end indicates that even physical games can be played on this system. As a result, players with vast collections of Switch games can rest assured knowing they’ll still be able to enjoy every title in their collection.

No fresh games were unveiled for the system, but the trailer concludes by hinting at a Nintendo Direct event for this upcoming console. On April 2, 2025, we’ll finally get details about the new system. Though it’s several months down the line, enthusiasts can look forward to learning more with anticipation, knowing that this new console is indeed on its way.
