Sydney Sweeney unveils the specifics of her extraordinary physical metamorphosis for portraying the role of boxer Christy Martin.
In an interview with W Magazine on a Monday, the actress from Euphoria spoke candidly about the intense training regimen she underwent to play the boxer. Sweeney spent nearly four months preparing, eventually adding more than 30 pounds to her weight for the part.
As a newcomer joining the cast, I was given around three and a half months to prepare for my role as Christy. My daily routine became a rigorous blend of training sessions. In the morning, I’d dedicate an hour to weightlifting, followed by two hours of kickboxing in the afternoon, and another hour of weightlifting in the evening. Each day was fueled by a diet focused on maintaining my energy levels for these intense workouts.
Sweeney confessed that due to all the intense training, her body underwent a significant transformation, making it impossible for her to wear any of her previous outfits.
Sweeney mentioned that she typically wears a size 23 in jeans, but she had been wearing a size 27 recently,” Sweeney said. “My bust expanded and my behind grew significantly. It was astonishing! I exclaimed, ‘Oh my goodness!’
Nevertheless, the Emmy nominee found no issue with the transformation in her looks. “It was fantastic,” she remarked, “I felt incredibly powerful, almost superhumanly strong.
Last October, Sweeney announced that she would be appearing in an upcoming Martin biopic, thanking some photographers hiding in bushes for the opportunity, as she posted on Instagram. When making the announcement, she also shared a photo of herself portraying Martin, with curly brown hair and toned arms.
Martin is known as one of the most productive female boxers throughout history, starting her career back in 1989 and retiring in 2012. In 2009, she claimed the WBC female super welterweight world champion title and remains the only female boxer to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated.
In 2010, Martin came extremely close to losing her life as a result of an attempted murder by her spouse, James Martin, who viciously stabbed and shot her. Despite this brutal attack, she managed to survive, and her assailant was subsequently imprisoned for 25 years.
For several months now, I’ve been deeply engrossed in training to tell the tale of an extraordinary woman – a real-life hero who waged battles not just within the ring, but beyond it as well. Her odyssey is a powerful symbol of resilience, fortitude, and optimism, and I feel privileged to take on her narrative, revealing her inspiring story to you all. More updates will be coming your way soon.
