As a gamer born in the late ’90s, I’ve grown up with technology and the digital world as my playground, much like these six talented artists at Nunu Fine Art New York. Having spent countless hours immersed in virtual realms, I can relate to their exploration of introspection and individuality amidst the endless sea of information.
As I traverse the digital realm, immersed in the bustling world of gaming and art, I find myself at Nunu Fine Art New York, where six talented artists from Taiwan are seeking tranquility amidst an ocean of information overload in their latest group exhibition. Titled In the Moment, this show offers a glimpse into our lives online as these artists grapple with the icy grip of fleeting digital fragments.
Nurtured in the 1990s era, these artists share a common bond through the rapid technological progression and political upheavals experienced during their formative years. Standing on the shoulders of the artistic generation preceding them, their artistry primarily focuses on self-reflection and personal expression—capturing the essence of their unique time period.
The works of “In the Moment” are bold and captivating, each artist bringing their unique perspective to the table. Chiao-Han Chueh creates movement and fantastical elements in unusual shapes. Fu Ning breathes life into the monotony of doomscrolling through a vibrant imagination. Guan-Hong Lu incorporates absurdity and humor in his narratives. Bing-Ao Li blends reality with fiction in various textures. Guan-Jhen Wang derives joy from hidden aspects, while Qi-Heng Xiao offers a warm take on technology.
In unison, the artists traverse the highs and lows of a continuously evolving universe, employing skillful artistry and profound emotion. As stated by curator Ching-Wen Chang to Observer, “Their sense of self transcends physical environments and delves into virtual landscapes.” In their creations, you perceive a balance between detachment and deep feeling. They maintain an air of calmness, yet continue to seek significance.
In the Moment is on view through October 31, 2024.
