Taiwanese Drama Series ‘Islanders’ Set for Global Launch on Amazon

The globally popular streaming platform, Amazon Prime Video, has secured the right to broadcast the highly anticipated Taiwanese drama series, “Islanders,” worldwide starting from July 18.

Directed jointly by Singaporean filmmaker Ler Jiyuan (of “Invisible Stories”) and Taiwanese theater director Tsai Pao-Chang, this eight-part series skillfully combines incisive social analysis with captivating visual storytelling, as suggested by the production team. Drawing inspiration from Lolita Hu’s award-winning novel “Islands”, the show follows the downfall of a prominent businessman whose tangled network of romantic relationships is laid bare following an explosive argument at a dinner party that goes viral. As the nation becomes enthralled by his scandal, his devoted assistant starts questioning her role in a society that’s been dramatically reshaped by social media, evolving cultural standards, and emotional detachment.

Amidst the vibrant cityscape of early 2010s Taipei, the cast of Islanders includes Golden Horse and Golden Bell Award winner Wu Kang-Jen, Southeast Asian icon Christopher Lee, Taipei Film Awards honoree Rima Zeidan, veteran actress Yu Tzu-Yu, and Japanese actor Yusuke Fukuchi, who plays a significant supporting role.

Filmed at various locations in Taiwan, New York, and Alaska, this series boasts an unusually grand production size and global cultural reach, making it remarkable within the realm of Taiwanese dramas.

Apart from premiering on Prime Video, the series titled “Islanders” is set to broadcast on multiple platforms. In Taiwan, it can be streamed on Catchplay+ and Line TV, while in Hong Kong, viewers can catch it on Now TV. Interestingly, a weekly episode will also be aired on the Catchplay Movie Channel.
