Take-Two CEO Shrugs Off GTA 6 Violence Concerns: “Not Worried”

2025 can’t come soon enough for me as I eagerly await the release of GTA 6. However, I can’t help but notice the old debate resurfacing about its potential impact on real-world behavior. Will this game lead to copycat crimes? Only time will tell.

The Grand Theft Auto series, known for its intense crime storylines, often sparks conversations about the impact of video games on society. Despite this, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, remains unconcerned that the game might have harmful consequences in reality. During a discussion with CNBC (via VideoGamer), Zelnick spoke about the violence in the game and its possible influence on real-life behavior.

He openly stated that he is unconcerned about GTA 6 potentially promoting violence, arguing that entertainment, be it video games, television, or films, simply mirrors existing behaviors rather than generating them. Zelnick elaborated, “Entertainment does not shape behavior; entertainment represents behavior,” emphasizing how these platforms offer individuals a means to express and interact with emotions without dictating actions. This viewpoint is not novel as the notion that violent games lead to real-life violence has been extensively disproven many times in the past.

Research indicates that opinions are divided regarding the influence of violent video games on aggressive behavior. While some believe there might be a slight correlation between playing such games and increased aggression, the evidence is not definitive. In the eyes of many professionals, there is no solid evidence connecting violent video games to actual acts of violence in reality.

Zelnick noted a striking difference: while many TV series and films show extremely lifelike portrayals of violence, they aren’t subjected to the same level of examination as video games. He brought up an interesting point – people regularly watch violent scenes in movies and television shows. However, these entertainment sources seldom receive criticism for inciting real-life violence, even though their depictions of harm can be quite graphic.

Ever since Grand Theft Auto was initially released in 1997, it’s drawn criticism for its portrayal of crime, violence, and moral complexity. However, as Zelnick pointed out during interviews, these elements have always been integral to the GTA storyline. Despite the ongoing debates, the GTA series has remained successful, with GTA 5 being one of the highest-selling games in history.

Zelnick posits that Take-Two‘s major hurdle doesn’t stem from criticism over violence, but rather from the escalating demand to meet the continually growing expectations of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) enthusiasts. As the series becomes progressively more lifelike, he anticipates that discussions regarding violent video games will become increasingly irrelevant. As the industry advances, it will shift its focus towards innovation, artistic expression, and delivering top-notch entertainment.
