As a child of the ’90s, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia as I write this. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been an integral part of my formative years, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about the first season of “Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” moving to Netflix on January 1.
Beginning January 1, fans everywhere will be excitedly exclaiming “cowabunga!” as the first season of “Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” shifts from Paramount+ to another streaming platform. This 12-episode series, initially aired on August 9, continues the narrative following last year’s animated film titled “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” which was jointly scripted by Seth Rogen.
In the series titled “Mutant Mayhem”, April O’Neil (played by Ayo Edebiri) embarks on her adventures in New York City alongside our turtle friends. The narrative progresses from the movie and focuses on the turtles’ run-ins with both new and recurring villains, as well as their high school experiences which will pave the way for the upcoming film scheduled for October 2026. This series is the newest installment in Netflix’s expanding library of TMNT content, including “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie” (2022), “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (2018) and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (2013). This expansion is part of Netflix’s collection of Nickelodeon shows. Over the past year, the streaming platform has also acquired “The Tiny Chef Show”, “Transformers: EarthSpark”, a spin-off of “PAW Patrol” titled “Rubble and Crew”, and “The Fairly OddParents!: A New Wish”!
It’s not unexpected that for several years now, Netflix and Nickelodeon have entered into formal collaborations to produce children’s content. This move comes in response to increasing competition from Disney+. In a 2019 press release, Nickelodeon’s president Brian Robbins stated, “Our aim is to continue expanding beyond traditional platforms, and our broader content partnership with Netflix is a crucial step towards that objective.
‘Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes
The show features actors like Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, Post Malone, Natasia Demetriou, Brady Noon, Rose Byrne, Danny Trejo, Pete Davidson, and Edebiri from the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” team. The series presents the teenage superheroes in a fresh, unique animation style that Animation World Network describes as “rough, scratchy teen-ish”, effectively capturing the essence of adolescent struggles. Audiences generally appreciated this new visual approach, awarding the series a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Beyond just the visual changes, co-creator Alan Wan explained to Animation World Network that they emphasized the characters’ roles as teenagers by saying, “The character behaviors and the performances from our actors give a genuine teenage vibe, making the show seem more authentic overall.” The use of younger, less established voice actors undeniably adds to this youthful atmosphere.
In her critique for The Hollywood Reporter, Angie Han expresses that the series offers an in-depth look into what drives the Turtles as a unit… When the Turtles ultimately come back together, the camaraderie they display toward one another is more profound due to our comprehensive grasp of their individual significance. This is her observation.
Regarding the upcoming sequel of “Mutant Mayhem”, Seth Rogen shared with Screen Rant that the project is progressing smoothly and they’ve already decided on a title (which hasn’t been revealed yet). However, no announcement about a second season for the series has been made as of now.
