This time, they’re starring in a fresh Kate Spade New York campaign, with a mission close to our hearts – raising awareness about women’s mental health initiatives.
In collaboration with actress Nicola Coughlan from Bridgerton, an Oscar-winning star and the founder of Genius Entertainment (age 20) have teamed up for the vibrant fashion brand’s autumn advertisement campaign. This new initiative showcases a fresh floral jacquard design and marks the launch of the brand’s Global Fund for Women’s Mental Health, in alliance with Pinterest, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Mindful Philanthropy. The aim of this fund is to offer enhanced accessibility to community-oriented, culturally sensitive mental health resources for women across various life stages, as stated by the company.
The group, consisting of stars dressed in upcoming items from Kate Spade’s autumn collection, underscores the significance of voicing concerns about women’s mental health. “Mental health care is a topic that remains unaddressed, underfunded,” Martin emphasizes, with Coughlan adding, “and has been left unsaid for too long.
Henson, who has just spoken with The Hollywood Reporter over Zoom, explains that the Earth is overpopulated for there to be only one of you. Previously, she collaborated with Kate Spade New York last September through her charity, the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, as part of the “Joy Joints!” initiative.
Henson explains to THR that he doesn’t simply attach his name to anything just because there’s a payment involved. Instead, it needs to align with my beliefs and values. It must be appropriate for my brand and image. And Kate Spade seems ideal as it embodies fashion with care.
Martin mentions, “In evaluating potential partnerships with brands, I prioritize finding shared values that run deep. On a Thursday, the lead actor from Fight Night attended an event alongside Martin, gymnastics legend Simone Biles, designer Aurora James of Brother Vellies, actress Sofia Wylie from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and costume designer Molly Rogers. They were all speakers at Kate Spade New York’s third annual conference focusing on women’s mental health, which took place before New York Fashion Week. TARAJI P. Henson Our collaboration just feels right. Everything associated with my brand revolves around self-care and mental wellness, which aligns with Kate Spade’s longstanding message. Our connection wasn’t contrived; it was a natural fit due to our shared values and commitment to empowering women. It simply makes sense. I don’t associate my name with just anything for a paycheck. There has to be a purpose, a meaning. The project must align with my brand and philosophy. Kate Spade is the ideal partner because it embodies care in fashion.
MARSAI MARTIN For many years, I’ve held a deep appreciation for the fashion house, kate spade. Memories from my childhood are filled with the brand, as both my mother and grandmother were ardent fans. One particular memory that stands out is receiving my first kate spade clutch at age 12 – a moment that has remained vivid in my mind. The brand’s infectious joy is palpable throughout their designs, making this collaboration feel like an organic choice.

We share similar values, making our partnership a natural fit. When we find synergy that works, there are no complications between us because we’re both committed to the same goal: empowering women and encouraging self-care, particularly mental health. This alignment makes perfect sense for us; it’s as obvious as daylight.
MARTIN Participating in this mental health advocacy project was deeply meaningful to me because I’ve always been attracted to tasks with significance, which resonates perfectly with the values of Kate Spade New York. Collaborating on this project with Taraji and Nicola underscored for me the necessity of self-care, pursuing personal happiness, and discovering what sustains you daily. The brand has created a wonderful network centered around the belief that joy carries a profound essence and manifests uniquely for each individual, which is something I deeply identify with.
The video campaign looks so joyful! What was the vibe on set?
Hey there! Let me tell you, it was an absolute blast hanging out with another fellow gamer girl, Nicola. We shared giggles and chatted about all things girls love: fashion, clothes, and even boys (well, gaming boys, to be precise). It’s always great catching up with someone new who gets the gaming lifestyle.
MARTIN The atmosphere on set was fantastic! As a big fan of Bridgerton, it was wonderful to collaborate with Nicola, particularly given my previous experience watching her season. Additionally, I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Taraji during the early stages of Black-ish, so being able to reunite for such an exceptional campaign was truly unique. Our time together was filled with laughter and camaraderie, which I believe is evident in the final product. It seemed as if we were merely a group of friends – a tight-knit community – bonding, supporting each other, and sharing our collective enthusiasm for being part of a project with such a profound purpose.
Which Kate Spade New York items do you prefer for the fall season? Could you tell me about your current fashion sense? (Paraphrased)
At the moment, my preferred items are a charming rose-adorned slip-on mule and a vibrant fuchsia leather skirt. Additionally, I’m enamored with my striped Kate Spade top inspired by the movie ‘Beetlejuice’. Although Kate Spade likely wasn’t aware of the film’s return, we’ve now nicknamed it the Beetlejuice top! It’s possible that Kate Spade designers didn’t know about the resurgence of ‘Beetlejuice’.
MARTIN This fall, I’m all about blending elegance and practicality. The Fall Poppies Taffeta Dress is just the ticket for a chic work ensemble that transitions seamlessly into evening wear. I always believe an outfit isn’t fully dressed without some accessories, and I enjoy combining whimsical and contemporary with revamped vintage pieces. When it comes to footwear, my preferred pick is the K Lace Up Sneaker in Brown Multi (available from October), which adds a touch of fun with its animal print. As for handbags, I can’t imagine parting with my Spade Flower Jacquard Shoulder Bag (arriving in October in Black Multi)! I adore how Kate Spade has reimagined the classic print with modern shapes.
Hey Marsai, it’s obvious that you’re always up to something exciting with Genius Entertainment and the Sai Summer Cookout! Could you please tell us all about this year’s event?
MARTIN The cookout was fantastic! It’s an event that emphasizes creating a welcoming atmosphere to celebrate HBCU culture. Last year, we held it in ATL, but hosting it in the DMV this time made it even more memorable! The vibe was extraordinary! So many individuals from various HBCUs attended, making it feel like a massive family gathering with an incredible atmosphere. Watching everyone enjoy themselves, connect, and create a positive energy was truly rewarding, making all the hard work and sleepless nights worthwhile.
I’m incredibly pleased with how our team pulled off this event – from the outstanding performances, scrumptious food offerings, reliable vendors, and even the thoughtful details. It was all about fostering a space where we could enjoy ourselves, express who we are, and have a great time before diving into the fall semester. I can’t wait to share our next destination with everyone – it promises to be something truly spectacular!
Hey Marsai! Since Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy has been released on Disney+ this month, could you share some memorable experiences you had while voicing Yesi Scala and collaborating with the crew and cast?
MARTIN Working on Yesi Scala’s voice is an incredible journey! Entering that world feels almost unreal. Yesi is intricate and powerful, and it was thrilling to breathe life into her. The whole team was fantastic to collaborate with, and the studio sessions were filled with good energy. We were all just grooving, focusing on ensuring Yesi’s narrative shone through clearly. I can hardly wait for everyone to get acquainted with her and discover her unique qualities.
Taraji, what projects are you excited to share with the world right now?
Currently, I’m involved in the upcoming release of “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist,” which airs on September 5th [on Peacock]. We’re gearing up for a press tour for this project. It’s set in the 1970s, a decade I hold dear as it marks my birth year, but I also adore the fashion of that era. Whenever I get to play a role or dress up for Halloween, parties with a ’70s theme, I really enjoy immersing myself in it. In this production, I’m surrounded by some prominent actors including Kevin Hart, Don Cheadle, Samuel L. Jackson, Terrence Howard, and Chloe Bailey. I’ve collaborated with most of them before, except for Samuel L. Jackson, this is my first time working with him. However, the experience was truly enjoyable. Craig Brewer, who directed four episodes, was fantastic to work with again; we previously worked together on “Hustle & Flow,” so reteaming with him was an exciting opportunity.
Were you already familiar with the true crime podcast? Did you binge-listen to it?
Initially, I hadn’t known a thing about the story. Yet, I often find myself questioning the authenticity of these scripts I frequently receive. Interestingly enough, I was told it was based on true events. Naturally, my curiosity piqued, and I felt compelled to learn more. There’s so much historical significance in this narrative that I wasn’t previously aware of.
And you know what else? it didn’t dawn on me until my character [Vivian Thomas] said it, that the damn lottery is a ripoff of the numbers running the numbers. And the Blacks used to do that in the neighborhood to just survive. You wouldn’t give us jobs. You didn’t pay for us if we had jobs, cheap labor or whatever, whatever. So we figured out a way we always do, and then the government comes in and takes it and makes it legal. I didn’t think about that. I didn’t put two and two together until this series.
Could you tell us, Marsai, which upcoming projects from Genius Entertainment have you particularly thrilled and can’t wait to share with everyone?
MARTIN Exciting times are ahead for Genius Entertainment! We’re working on several projects that I can’t wait to share. Our focus remains on supporting young Black artists and creating authentic, down-to-earth narratives. Additionally, we’re branching out into uncharted territories with international collaborations and ventures that will offer a fresh perspective on our work!
