TCM Classic Film Festival to Honor Michelle Pfeiffer With Hand and Footprint Ceremony

Enthusiasts of Michelle Pfeiffer can anticipate a joyous occasion, or as we might put it, a lively celebration – let’s call that “making a ruckus” – when she sets her handprints and footprints in cement at the TCL Chinese Theatre next month.

The announcement made on Thursday revealed that the event is scheduled for the TCM Classic Film Festival, which occurs from April 24th to 27th.

According to the announcement made on Thursday, the event will unfold within the TCM Classic Film Festival, running from April 24-27.

One standout role by Pfeiffer, where she played the sultry lounge singer Susie Diamond in The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), which earned her her second of three career Oscar nominations, will be highlighted at the 16th edition of this event. (In this film, you can see her not just playing the piano, but practically dancing on it.)

Michelle Pfeiffer’s performances are undeniably exceptional,” Ben Mankiewicz noted in his statement. “She masterfully combines grace and complexity, skillfully portraying the intricacies of each character she embodies.

For instance, consider her roles where she played the spouse or companion of a criminal mastermind, first in Brian De Palma’s intense drama titled ‘Scarface‘, alongside Al Pacino, and then as the main character in Jonathan Demme’s romantic comedy ‘Married to the Mob‘.

In the movies ‘Scarface’ and ‘Married to the Mob’, she could have simply been portrayed as an object of desire by the male characters. However, she gave these roles a unique twist, making Elvira in ‘Scarface’ more relatable and complex, while in ‘Married to the Mob’, she flipped the character type on its head, becoming the emotional core of the film. Following these powerful performances, it was clear that a significant talent had emerged in Hollywood.

For more than three decades, Michelle Pfeiffer has kept her word by delivering outstanding performances film after film. Some of these films include ‘The Fabulous Baker Boys’, ‘Dangerous Liaisons’, ‘Russia House’, ‘Catwoman’, ‘Hairspray’, her award-winning portrayal of Betty Ford in ‘The First Lady’, and her compelling role as Bernie Madoff’s wife, Ruth, in the HBO movie ‘Wizard of Lies’. Regardless of the character she plays, Michelle Pfeiffer’s performances are consistently nuanced and strikingly authentic.

This year’s Hand and Footprint Ceremony will mark the 12th time this tradition has been carried out at the TCM Classic Film Festival. Previous honorees include Peter O’Toole (2011), Kim Novak (2012), Jane Fonda (2013), Jerry Lewis (2014), Christopher Plummer (2015), Francis Ford Coppola (2016), the Reiner brothers, Carl and Rob (2017), Cicely Tyson (2018), Billy Crystal (2019), Lily Tomlin (2022) and Jodie Foster (2024).

This year’s festival will bestow the Robert Osborne Award upon George Stevens Jr., an honor given to those who preserve the historical significance of classic cinema for upcoming generations. Additionally, director Michael Schultz will be honored for his enduring influence on the world of filmmaking.
