As a passionate admirer of the world of entertainment and philanthropy, I find myself deeply moved by the inspiring story of Shawn Levy and his wife Serena. The couple’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate is truly commendable.
Director Shawn Levy, known for directing Deadpool and Wolverine, received recognition on Thursday not just for having a blockbuster movie this year, but also for his charitable works alongside his wife Serena.
The duo received recognition at the A Sense of Home Gala, an event supporting a non-profit organization that strives to combat homelessness by constructing the first homes and a community for young adults exiting foster care. The event, hosted by Ted Sarandos and Nicole Avant, took place at their residence in Los Angeles. Attendees included Jason Bateman, Tobey Maguire, Edward Norton, Michelle Rodriguez, Terry Crews, Emile Hirsch, Scott Stuber, Molly Sims, Mayor Karen Bass, L.A. County Supervisor Holly Mitchell, among others.
Sarandos and Avant became intrigued by the issue connecting former foster youth and homelessness in our city when we began pondering upon it. This is a complex problem that appears to have a straightforward solution,” Sarandos explained during the event. “Many factors contribute to housing instability and homelessness, most of which we can’t address individually, but what we discovered with A Sense of Home was an emphasis on people helping people.” Over the past nine years, this organization has built 1,000 homes in L.A.
After that, the Netflix executive shifted his focus to the Levys, praising them as “kind-hearted, motivational, and diligent individuals.” He playfully added, “They’re both involved in aiding children who require assistance. Serena works as a youth and family counselor, both in private practice and at Cedars Sinai, while Shawn directs movies starring Ryan Reynolds.
About two weeks back, I found myself on the set in Atlanta for the season finale of Stranger Things. To avoid revealing any spoilers, I won’t delve into specifics, but let me tell you, witnessing this artist at work, skillfully orchestrating all these elements to translate your nighttime visions to reality, left me utterly spellbound,” Sarandos said, noting that Levy serves as an executive producer on the Netflix show.
In a different wording: Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who starred in Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine, extended their virtual congratulations with Reynolds expressing, “It isn’t often one encounters individuals as exceptional on the inside and out, whose grace shines brightest through their acts of kindness towards numerous people… I feel a deep sense of pride in knowing them, and it brings me joy to know my children also know them. I adore them, and I’m pleased that you do too.
Stepping up to address everyone, I couldn’t help but reflect on our fortunate circumstances. Homes, as we know them, aren’t just a given – they’re not something that everyone can take for granted. Feeling incredibly thankful, my partner and I are truly blessed with the roof over our heads.
It’s a privilege to be part of something significant. I truly enjoy my work – hearing your stories, Ted, has been incredibly humbling for me. However, what stands out most is the opportunity we have to use our good fortune, no matter how modest, to help those who lack such basics as a home. That’s what I’m mindful of tonight and what we should all be truly thankful for tonight.” Phillip Phillips concluded the event, which garnered $1.5 million, with a performance.
