As a longtime fan of the Terminator franchise, I am beyond excited for Netflix’s anime reboot, Terminator Zero. The trailer’s unique perspective, presented through the voice and actions of Eiko, a resistance fighter voiced by Sonoya Mizuno, adds an intriguing layer to the already iconic sci-fi storyline.
In the debut trailer for “Terminator Zero,” now streaming on Netflix, we learn about a desperate effort to prevent a menacing artificial intelligence from igniting a brutal human conflict – the latest installment in the Terminator series.
In Japan, the trailer begins with the animated character Eiko, played by Sonoya Mizuno, serving as our guide. Eiko is a resistance fighter with a voiceover, and she’s been sent back in time to safeguard Malcolm Lee (André Holland) during his creation of Kokoro – an advanced artificial intelligence that could challenge the malevolent Skynet and its forthcoming assault on humanity.
“Between you and him, there’s just one obstacle left – me,” Mizuno, the renowned actress from ‘House of Dragon,’ declares dramatically as a young woman points a gun at a menacing future cyborg assassin on the screen, ready to pull the trigger.
On August 29, which is also known as “Judgment Day,” the anime series created for Netflix by Mattson Tomlin, the writer of “The Batman II,” is scheduled to be released. This premiere will take place simultaneously with “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” on Amazon Prime Video.
In the voice ensemble of “Terminator Zero,” Timothy Olyphant lends his voice to the Terminator character, Rosario Dawson voices Kokoro, and Ann Dowd portrays The Prophet – a thoughtful mentor for the human resistance, providing guidance to survivors as they navigate the uncertain future.
In the words of the producers’ summary, the storyline for “Terminator Zero” unfolds in two timeframes: one in the year 2022, where humans are fighting a prolonged battle against machines for survival; and another in 1997, marking the dawn of Skynet’s self-awareness and its subsequent declaration of war against humanity.
The eight-episode anime series, produced by Japanese studio Production IG and helmed by director Masashi Kudo, introduces fresh characters and marks the initial animated adaptation of the Terminator film series. Tomlin holds the role of showrunner, writer, and executive producer, while Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger serve as executive producers.
Starting in 2023, Skydance Animation signed a long-term agreement with Netflix to create and bring animated films to the streaming platform.
