Terrifier 3 Shocks As It Slashes Its Way To The Top Of The Weekend Box Office, Joker: Folie À Deux Takes A Huge Drop

As a horror enthusiast with over three decades of experiencing the chills and thrills that come from the genre, I must say, this year has been a rollercoaster ride! The recent box office performance of “Terrifier 3” has me genuinely excited for the future of horror movies.

In 2019, Todd Phillips’ movie “Joker” was an unprecedented hit at the box office, raking in more than $1 billion globally and holding the title of highest-grossing R-rated film ever (until Shawn Levy’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” surpassed it this past summer). Consequently, there were immense anticipations for Phillips’ upcoming film “Joker: Folie À Deux,” which was slated to rule the cinematic landscape throughout October 2024. However, as is often the case with sky-high expectations, a significant twist occurred over the weekend in movie theaters.

Following the disappointing debut weekend of “Joker: Folie À Deux,” an unexpected turn of events has occurred in the domestic box office. To everyone’s astonishment, the number one movie is now none other than Damien Leone’s indie slasher sequel, “Terrifier 3.” Here’s the complete Top 10 list for you to take a look at, and let’s dive deeper into the analysis together afterwards.

Extreme Buzz For Terrifier 3 During Spooky Season Leads Art The Clown To His Very First Box Office Crown

Although Terrifier 3 is actually the fourth film featuring the brutal slasher character Art The Clown (after the anthology movie All Hallows’ Eve and the two previous Terrifier movies), it was primarily with the release of Terrifier 2 in 2022 that a wider audience began to take notice. This film sparked numerous intriguing headlines as viewers were reportedly being sickened by Art The Clown’s gruesome on-screen actions in theaters, which generated much interest. Remarkably, this movie made on a budget of only $250,000 (according to Variety) went on to earn $15.7 million during its eight-week theatrical run worldwide.

Terrifier 3 just made more than that domestically in just three days.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but be thrilled to share that this past weekend, the terrifying new sequel in the “Terrifier” franchise became the top-grossing title! Playing in approximately 2,500 theaters, it raked in an astounding $18.3 million. Despite having a bigger budget than its predecessor, which was around $2 million to produce – a mere fraction of what “Joker: Folie À Deux” is rumored to have cost.

Last month at Fantastic Fest 2024, the horror film with a Christmas theme made its debut and has received favorable reviews from critics. Notably, Nick Venable of TopMob gave it a rating of three-and-a-half stars in his review for “Terrifier 3,” describing it as an exuberant showcase of gory violence.

It’s quite surprising to witness a low-budget film such as “Terrifier 3” claiming victory at the box office in this manner. However, it’s not entirely unexpected that moviegoers are eagerly seeking out fresh and thrilling horror movies. Recent industry watchers might recall Zach Cregger’s “Barbarian” and Parker Finn’s “Smile” performing exceptionally well in the days leading up to Halloween last year. Additionally, we had Kevin Greutert’s “Saw X” and Emma Tammi’s “Five Night’s At Freddy’s” delivering solid performances the previous year.

2024 looks set to deliver an exhilarating horror movie season, with the recent successes of Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Terrifier 3.” Anticipation is high for Parker Finn’s “Smile 2,” due in theaters this Friday. Early reactions are anticipated mid-week, promising a chilling experience that many horror enthusiasts eagerly await.

Will “Terrifier 3” continue to rank among the Top 10 movies for the upcoming fortnight, given that the year-end holiday is fast approaching? I’m optimistic that it will hold its position, making it a fascinating storyline to watch unfold throughout October.

Joker: Folie À Deux Takes An Extreme Weekend-To-Weekend Dip, Falling To Third Place

It seems that the film Joker: Folie À Deux hasn’t been met with widespread enthusiasm. Its debut at the Venice Film Festival in early September was underwhelming, as reflected in my two-and-a-half star review on TopMob. Since then, audiences have expressed strong disapproval of the movie. Last week, it garnered a “D” grade from CinemaScore surveys, and both critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes have given it scores in the low 30s, which align with the negative sentiment.

Now, it appears that the movie has experienced a significant amount of ridicule based on its ticket sales. Initially, the film had a weak debut weekend, earning only about half as much as Joker did in late 2019. However, the true impact is evident in its second week, as ticket sales plummeted by an astounding 81 percent domestically. This steep decline is detrimental to the movie’s success. Furthermore, it fell from first place to third position, with Chris Sanders’ charming animated film The Wild Robot taking the silver medal for the second week in a row after ousting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice at the end of September.

2024 has been a tough year for box office success, but even with my love for gaming, I can’t sugarcoat it: Joker: Folie À Deux hasn’t exactly been a blockbuster hit. Despite its whopping budget, the movie only managed to rake in $51.6 million from U.S. and Canadian box offices this weekend, adding a mere $7.1 million to its total.

Let me provide some additional context about the film’s current situation. For instance, the movie “Joker,” released in 2019, had already amassed an impressive $193.6 million by its tenth day within the domestic market, all on its own.

According to what we’ve mentioned earlier, the movie “Smile 2” starring Naomi Scott is predicted to claim the top position at the box office soon, although we won’t know its exact performance until this coming Sunday. Keep an eye on TopMob next week for the results, and for now, you can explore our Movie Release Schedule for 2024 to learn about upcoming releases in theatres.
