As a gamer who grew up in the 90s, it’s always bittersweet when a show that was a significant part of my childhood comes to an end. That ’90s Show was a delightful spin-off from the iconic That ’70s Show, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Formans and their grandkids navigate the world of the 90s. Kurtwood Smith’s portrayal of Red Forman was as spot-on as ever, and his heartfelt Instagram post was a testament to the love and dedication the cast and crew put into the show.
That ’90s Show won’t be getting a third season.
According to one of the show’s main actors, Kurtwood Smith, he shared this news on Instagram last night.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly waiting for news about season 3, but it’s with a heavy heart that I must share some disappointing updates. Unfortunately, Netflix has decided not to renew our beloved series any longer.
In a nostalgic throwback to my favorite decade, I stepped back into the shoes of Red Forman, revisiting my iconic role from the classic series, “That ’70s Show.” This time, Debra Jo Rupp once again brought Kitty, her charming portrayal of my wife, to life – both on the original and the new series.
Smith went on expressing his joy, ‘I’ve cherished every moment of breathing life into Grandpa Red for everyone here.’ Previously, I expressed this sentiment, but it bears repeating: this project was filled with an incredible amount of heart and had a fantastic cast, writers, directors, producers, and crew. Thank you for allowing Red, Kitty, their grandkids, friends, neighbors, the original cast members of That 70’s Show, and all our delightful guest stars to keep you entertained for two seasons.
In the ’90s TV show’s sequel, set 15 years later, we follow Callie Haverda, daughter of Eric (originally played by Topher Grace) and Donna (originally acted by Laura Prepon), as she spends a summer with her grandparents, the Formans.
Notable guest stars who graced the ’90s version of the show were Wilmer Valderrama, Mila Kunis, and Ashton Kutcher. The regular cast consisted of Ashley Aufderheide, Mace Coronel, Maxwell Acee Donovan, Reyn Doi, and Sam Morelos as well.
In his post, Smith indicated that he feels the show isn’t quite dead yet, however.
“In Red Forman’s own words… we won’t act foolishly, instead, we’ll put in the effort to make sure these kids graduate from high school. That’s what great grandparents do.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Netflix for comment.
