That Time Scarlett Johansson Admitted She Had A Crush On One Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, And Her Pick Got So Real

As a gamer who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, I can wholeheartedly relate to Scarlett Johansson’s confession about her childhood crush on Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s funny how our formative years are influenced by the characters we admire, even if they are mutant turtles with a penchant for trouble!

It’s not unusual at all to have a crush on an animated character as a kid. Scarlett Johansson recently shared that one of her childhood dreams stemmed from watching the fantastic cartoon series, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” I must admit, I wasn’t prepared for her explanation to delve so deeply and resonate so strongly with many of us.

During her interviews while promoting her voice role in the “Transformers One” movie, Johansson revealed which Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle she had a special fondness for. This came up when she was asked about any animated character or toy she was particularly enamored with as a child, and here’s what she shared:

Back in my childhood days, the Ninja Turtles were all the rage, and here’s something unusual – I had a crush on Raphael, which sounds absurd given that he’s a mutant turtle. What attracted me was his troubled personality; it turned out to be a significant influence on my dating preferences. Instead of choosing the nice guys, I often found myself drawn to the jerks. This can be traced back to Raphael. Admittedly, it had an impact on me, not always in a positive way. And no, I didn’t fancy Leonardo, and maybe I should have opted for Donatello instead.

During the late ’80s and early ’90s of Johansson’s childhood, the original animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series was airing on TV. Specifically, she recalls which one of the turtles she became particularly fond of. As a child, she had a strong affinity for Raphael, who is the rebellious member of the group, sporting a red mask and often acting without thinking. While watching the series was enjoyable during her childhood, she later recognized a significant warning sign in her romantic relationships that could be traced back to her attraction towards this character.

I don’t know about you, but I find this way too on point. Children’s TV and pop culture always tends to make the toxic character of the group more handsome and brooding than the others, and it messes with one’s little brain into looking for those archetypes in reality… and spoiler alert, a Raphael in the wild doesn’t necessarily make the best partner long term.

Johansson, who was known for her rebellious streak in her younger years, eventually found stability. She tied the knot with Colin Jost, a prominent figure from Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update,” whom she had initially met years ago but waited to date until later. They are often admired as relationship goals, Johansson joked after confessing about her relationship with Raphael.

I married Michaelangelo.

That’s absolutely right. Michelangelo is known to be “the funny one” as he’s always cracking jokes and bringing goofy energy to the squad of turtles, and that certainly feels true to the SNL cast member. Check out Scarlett Johannson’s full response on MTV’s Instagram:

Reflecting on relationships, it seems there are four basic types of partners: “The Leader” (Leonardo), who takes charge, “The Genius” (Donatello), who brings intelligence and creativity, “The Funny One” (Michelangelo), who adds humor to the mix, and “The Rebel” (Raphael), who challenges the status quo. If you’re partnered up, see if you can identify which archetype your significant other fits into.

Enthusiasts of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series have plenty to look forward to, as a sequel to 2023’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” is confirmed. Additionally, an adult-oriented, live-action “TMNT” film is in the works. Indeed, a fresh batch of viewers will soon share Johansson’s excitement!
