As a gamer who has lived through the ’80s and ’90s, I can confidently say that Tom Cruise’s dance scene in Risky Business is one of the most iconic moments in cinematic history. It’s fascinating to learn that the man himself performed this dance move before the movie was even released!
In the annals of cinema, numerous dance scenes have left lasting impressions, yet few rival the iconic one featured in “Risky Business.” Directed by Paul Brickman and set in the ’80s, this coming-of-age dramedy is renowned for a dance scene where Tom Cruise displays some impressive moves. Incredulously, it’s been revealed that he performed this very dance during an actual date, surprising us all, as this happened before the movie was even released!
In the past, the eventual star of Top Gun had a date with Heather Locklear, who is famous for her role in Dynasty. This weekend at ’90s Con Florida, Locklear spoke about this outing with the rising Hollywood actor, whom she also auditioned alongside. Later, she met him again when he visited her home with Sean Penn. According to Locklear’s account of the Outsiders alum, he was a true gentleman.
At that point in time, he resembled a small boy, and given my age difference, I guess I was a bit older. Interestingly, he visited my house with Sean Penn. They were both cordial, but he was particularly polite towards me, to which I responded respectfully as ‘ma’am’. Later on, we went dancing at Club Lingerie, and let me tell you, he was quite appealing.
It appears Tom Cruise didn’t quite gel with Heather Locklear’s “rock and roll” persona, but that didn’t prevent them from going out together. As Locklear remembers (through People), an evening they shared stands out to her now due to the sight of the actor from Rain Man dancing seriously on the dance floor. Locklear also recalls witnessing moves that would later become famous in films.
He actually did that before [the movie], and I was dancing along like, ‘Do you stop dancing if they’re down there?’ I was like ‘Yay!’ But he was very nice to me.

Why Risky Business’ Director Quit Hollywood Immediately After The Film’s Release
1983’s “Risky Business” features Tom Cruise as Joel Goodsen, a high school student who unexpectedly gets involved with an elegant escort (a typical ’80s movie predicament that no teenager should encounter). After his parents depart for a trip at the start of the film, Joel seizes the moment to perform a lively dance to George Jackson’s “Old Time Rock and Roll” while clad only in his underwear. This iconic scene has since become widely recognized and spoofed numerous times in cinema.
It’s amusing to think about the actor from Jerry Maguire doing a dance routine before his famous movie was released. Since he often danced on his knees on the dance floor, this could have influenced the choice for him to perform that specific dance in front of cameras later. Unfortunately, there’s no footage of him dancing at the club, but you can catch a glimpse of his moves in the film by watching the video clip below.
It seems we’re pondering if the renowned star from “Edge of Tomorrow” might reprise such actions in a potential sequel. Earlier, he revealed that a continuation of “Risky Business” was proposed to him, but he felt unprepared to join at that time. He also voiced doubts about the plot’s development, which makes sense given the movie’s success as a standalone work. However, the anecdote about Heather Locklear witnessing the actor performing the dance in real life adds a charming touch to the film’s legacy.
