As a gamer who grew up watching Winona Ryder grace our screens with her dark yet delightful performances, I can confidently say that the TSA agents have some strange priorities if they thought making her say “Beetlejuice” three times was worth delaying her flight. It’s like they were trying to summon the Ghost with the Most themselves!
Since you first watched Tim Burton’s movie “Beetlejuice”, have you found yourself inclined to utter the poltergeist’s name thrice? Winona Ryder, who played Lydia Deetz in 1988 and revisited her role in the much-awaited sequel titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice“, has definitely done so. Interestingly, Ryder has also used the ghost’s name in real life, outside of the horror-comedy film series, as she shared an eccentric tale about being held up by the TSA to say “Beetlejuice” three times.
It’s no surprise that when people see Winona Ryder, they think of Beetlejuice, one of her best movies. She played Lydia flawlessly with all of her dark, yet funny memorable quotes from the Tim Burton classic as well as fashioning her goth attire. Her Beetlejuice presence is so memorable that the Stranger Things actress told the story to eTalk CTV of the TSA holding her up so she’d say the name of Michael Keaton’s character name three times:
I’ve missed flights due to airport security insisting that I repeat a certain phrase three times. However, I complied and even asked for more, only to explain, ‘I need to hurry!’ as I was running late.
It’s preposterous to intentionally cause someone to miss their flight just so they can repeat the word “Beetlejuice” three times. Frankly, I wouldn’t want to be associated with such an airline at this moment. One might wonder if the TSA agents were secretly hoping that the famous ghost character would materialize upon hearing his name. Personally, I think it’s more fitting for a Halloween Horror Nights haunted house than an airport setting.
For the last 35 years, enthusiasts of Tim Burton’s comedy-horror film “Beetlejuice” have been repeatedly calling out the character’s name. After years of speculation about whether a “Beetlejuice” sequel would ever come to fruition, our wishes have finally been granted as several members of the original cast – including Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara – will reprise their roles in the upcoming film titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice“. Additionally, fresh talent like Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, among others, are set to join the cast in the Land of the Dead. Given “Beetlejuice”‘s massive cultural impact, with its popular merchandise, Halloween costumes, and overwhelming public response to the character, I have a strong feeling that this sequel will prove to be a financial success for the gothic culture director.
Winona Ryder continues to repeat “Beetlejuice” in conversations, even years after the 1988 movie was released. It seems she had clandestine talks with Tim Burton for years about a potential sequel. In fact, when joining Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” she had a special condition related to Beetlejuice that the creators, the Duffer Brothers, had to accommodate if a sequel was ever greenlit. Her dedication demonstrates that she wouldn’t let anyone else play her iconic Lydia role except herself. Lydia, a character from Beetlejuice, has left such an impression that airport security personnel stopped Winona Ryder to let her shout “Beetlejuice” three times. With the upcoming theater release of the film on September 6th in 2024, I have a feeling we’ll be hearing this ghostly character’s name more frequently.
