‘That Was Real And These Two Stayed In Character!’ The Improvised Nobody Wants This Scene That Made Adam Brody Realize He Should Be ‘A Better Actor’

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating the vast digital landscapes of various worlds and stories, I can confidently say that the captivating romance between Joanne and Noah in Nobody Wants This is a breath of fresh air that rivals even the most engaging video game narratives I’ve encountered.

In a thrilling turn of events, Kristen Bell and Adam Brody are captivating as Joanne and Noah in the Netflix production titled “Nobody Wants This” which has been announced for 2024. I’m absolutely hooked and eagerly awaiting what unfolds in Season 2 for these unique characters and their meddling families. Given the chance, I would gladly rewatch the show, and now that I know the most charming flirtatious scene was improvised, my excitement is even higher! Remarkably, this spontaneous moment not only added a touch of humor but also inspired Brody to strive for better acting performances.

The showrunner Erin Foster, along with the two main actors, recently attended a FYC panel for promotional purposes of their latest successful (yet controversial) series. During the event, Foster revealed to Janine Rubenstein from People that a scene in the first episode was altered due to Adam Brody’s genuine struggle with a specific task. However, the scene ultimately turned out well thanks to the strong chemistry between Brody and Kristen Bell.

Regarding improvisation, it’s important to acknowledge Kristen and Adam during the pilot. In an unexpected turn of events, when Adam attempted to open the wine bottle, we found out in the moment that he is not familiar with opening a wine bottle. This was genuine, and they both managed to maintain their roles superbly!

If you recall, this is where Joanne and Noah initially crossed paths at a friend’s dinner gathering. In an attempt to be gallant by opening Joanne’s wine bottle, Noah faced three unsuccessful attempts. Fortunately for them, the mishap transpired during a conversation about awkward tidbits, providing the seasoned actors with ample opportunity to improvise humorously. Erin Foster noted:

It’s so special because it’s totally real and they kept the dialogue going. But then when you say like, ‘Oh, it’s an embarrassing thing about me, I was a sommelier.’ That’s all just improv that he came up with because he genuinely couldn’t open a bottle of wine.

The scene vividly showcases the genuine and captivating rapport between them, which is a clear indication of their exceptional improvisational skills. It’s quite likely that instances like this, along with others, initially drew in viewers. Given their earlier collaborations on “Veronica Mars” and “The OC”, it’s no wonder they excel at swift dialogue and clever quips. Frankly, I find it completely unsurprising that Kristen Bell and Adam Brody have earned so much appreciation.

Upon rewatching, it’s clear that the script encountered an unexpected problem, one that viewers likely wouldn’t notice unless pointed out. However, the actors handled it gracefully without skipping a beat. It was truly remarkable. An improvised line from Adam Brody, such as “What’s my embarrassing thing? Well, I used to be a sommelier,” even caused the Frozen actor to burst into a genuine laugh. I hope keeping the scene in the film helped ease the Kid Detective actor’s embarrassment, given his visible discomfort: it was evident that he found the unplanned incident quite amusing.

In my mind, had I been more skilled as an actor, I might have mastered the art of opening a bottle of wine prior to filming that scene.

In essence, it’s clear that he was just messing around, but truthfully, the difficulty in opening the wine isn’t significant. Instead, Adam Brody’s reaction stole the show, showcasing his acting talent. Even though they likely reduced his struggle with the cork from a lengthy seven-minute scene. In any case, this entire exchange made me chuckle and tap my feet, and I don’t think Brody needs to strive for improvement as an actor.

Following incidents such as the wine bottle mishap and a first kiss so captivating it left Kristen Bell’s husband, Dax Shepard, spellbound, it’s no surprise that the romantic comedy was swiftly renewed for a second season right after its September debut. The chemistry between Noah and Joanne is clearly exceptional, and they already rank among the greatest TV rom-com couples ever.
