“That’s My Dad!”: Tim Walz’s Children Steal America’s Heart Amid Tears at the DNC

“That’s My Dad!”: Tim Walz’s Children Steal America’s Heart Amid Tears at the DNC

As a parent of a child with ADHD and anxiety disorders myself, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of connection watching Tim Walz’s son Gus during his heartfelt speech at the Democratic National Convention. Seeing a fellow parent navigate the challenges of raising a neurodivergent child with grace, humor, and unwavering love was both inspiring and deeply moving. The raw emotion displayed by Gus as he proudly declared “That’s my dad!” spoke volumes about the bond between father and son and served as a reminder that our children’s unique abilities can often be their greatest strengths.

During the third evening of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, the hearts of Americans were captured by the Walz family. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, standing as Kamala Harris’ running mate, received his party’s nomination with emotional support from his wife Gwen, daughter Hope, and son Gus.

Following an emotional salute from his ex-football teammates at his old high school, accompanied by shouts of “Coach!”, Walz made his appearance as the closing speaker of the night at Chicago’s United Center. With a powerful voice, jovial demeanor, and down-to-earth charisma, Walz enthralled the DNC audience with an energetic speech.

However, it was Walz’s kids, and their heartfelt reactions to seeing their father on stage, that touched social media deeply. In the course of his speech, the governor turned towards his family and expressed, “Hope, Gus and Gwen, you are my universe and I adore you.” The camera then focused on Gus and Hope, who were visibly weeping. Hope gestured a ‘love’ sign with her hands, while Gus was so overwhelmed that he stood up and exclaimed repeatedly, “That’s my father!”

The Gus moment instantly went viral on social media, particularly as many people were discovering for the first time that the 17-year-old has ADHD, a non-verbal learning disorder and an anxiety disorder. The raucous convention as well as all the attention would be a challenge for any neurotypical person, but for someone neurodivergent like Gus, the situation would be particularly overwhelming. Still, he handled it with passion and grace.

Across various social platforms, footage of Gus engaging in energetic activities has been widely shared, accumulating a massive number of likes and reshares. Neurodiverse individuals like myself, as well as parents of neurodiverse children, have found this particular instance particularly moving.

Watching Tim Walz’s 17-year-old son, who struggles with non-verbal learning disorder, ADHD, and anxiety disorders, tearfully point to the stage and say “that’s my dad,” deeply moved me as a father of a teenage son dealing with autism, ADHD, and anxiety issues.

In reference to being a parent of a child with autism… Whenever my son gazes at me in a way that mirrors Gus Walz’s gaze toward his father, it will be clear to me… I have fulfilled my responsibilities and can pass away contentedly.

Last this month, the Walz family opened up to People Magazine about their son Gus’s non-verbal learning disorder. As they recounted, it became progressively evident as Gus was growing up that he was not like his peers. “Gus showed a preference for video games and enjoyed spending more time alone,” they explained.

In a different phrasing, it might sound like this: Tim Walz had the potential to deliver a speech on par with the Gettysburg Address, but what everyone will recall instead is his son emotionally exclaiming “That’s my father!”

As a teenager myself, I came to understand that my friend Gus has both a non-verbal learning disorder and anxiety disorder, along with ADHD – conditions shared by millions of fellow Americans. Much like many American families, it took us time to navigate the best ways to support Gus’s success throughout his developmental journey.

Based on my own life experiences, I have learned that sometimes when faced with unexpected challenges, we can discover our hidden strengths. Just as Gus’ condition has presented a unique set of difficulties for him, it has also revealed his secret power to persevere and adapt in ways that many might not be able to. Time has shown me that what may seem like a setback at first, can ultimately lead to personal growth and the discovery of one’s true potential.

You know you’ve done well as a parent when your kids are as proud of you as Gus and Hope are of Tim Walz. “That’s my dad.” No three words better describe our next Vice President.
