Soulmates
The TV series “Soulmates” by AMC explores the concept of technology supposedly able to find true love, featuring different couples in each episode. In Season 1, Episode 4 titled “Layover,” Bill Skarsgård plays Mateo, a character traveling to meet his predetermined partner in Colombia. However, during a stopover in Mexico, he unexpectedly engages in a one-night stand with Jonah (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), a swindler who takes advantage of the situation by stealing Mateo’s passport and funds.
What follows is a long and surprisingly amusing buddy quest to relocate Mateo’s lost property, and the show’s first real clue that the matchmaking technology might not be all that it’s cracked up to be. In an international career that’s increasingly gravitating toward bombastic antagonists and tragic protagonists, the out-of-his-depth Mateo is an excellent opportunity to see Skarsgård play a far more mundane but no less entertaining character.
Villains
In the film “Villains,” Bill Skarsgård portrays an antagonist, which is not unexpected. However, this time he faces adversaries who are even more malevolent. Characters Mickey, played by Skarsgård, and Jules, portrayed by Maika Monroe, are young offenders planning a burglary. Unbeknownst to them, they inadvertently break into the home of George (Jeffrey Donovan) and Gloria (Kyra Sedgwick), who turn out to be individuals that are much stranger and more menacing than anticipated.
Besides being an enjoyable horror-comedy, “Villains” also stands out due to its intricate layering, making it worthwhile for Skarsgård fans to watch. After all, how frequently do you get to see the actor portray a villain who unexpectedly finds himself up against two even more formidable antagonists and ends up taking on the lead role?
Deadpool 2
As the gravel-voiced Zeitgeist in Deadpool 2’s X-Force team, Bill Skarsgård didn’t have much to work with, but he nailed every moment he got. From his deadpan “throat clearing” when showing off his powers to his gruesome wood chipper demise, Skarsgård gave it his all and elevated the movie with his limited screen time. To top it off, I can now say I was part of a superhero team alongside Ryan Reynolds, Zazie Beetz, Terry Crews, Lewis Tan, Rob Delaney, and (technically speaking) Brad Pitt. Not many people can boast that on their resumé.
Castle Rock
Hulu’s critically acclaimed psychological horror series “Castle Rock” is set in a town from Stephen King’s fictional universe, which means there are plenty of eccentric characters roaming about. Notably, Bill Skarsgård portrays the most peculiar and menacing character within this group.
This character, who appears to be an ordinary, kind individual, might even be so in certain situations. However, he is actually a timeless, seemingly immortal being, and disturbing events seem to follow him wherever he goes. However, it comes as quite a shock when the real horrors of the movie are unveiled, leading to the demise of poor Keith. It’s impressive how “Barbarian” utilized Skarsgård in this role, knowing that it would catch viewers off guard by subverting their expectations.
John Wick: Chapter Four
In “John Wick: Chapter 4”, John Wick (played by Keanu Reeves) encounters his toughest adversary yet in Bill Skarsgård’s character, Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont. Unlike any other foe, the Marquis isn’t a fighter but rather a cunning individual with almost limitless resources. He defeats John by systematically destroying everything around him and placing him in an impossible predicament. As the ideal villain for the best “John Wick” film to date, Skarsgård was brilliantly cast for this role, reflecting his ability to portray formidable antagonists who can potentially disrupt the game. Given that Skarsgård developed the Marquis’ villainous qualities himself, the choice was particularly fitting.
It
In the world of horror films, Tim Curry’s interpretation of Pennywise had been the undisputed leader in the terrifying clown category for a long time. It was thought that a relatively unknown actor like Skarsgård might struggle to live up to such a legendary performance. However, Skarsgård swiftly silenced all doubters with his chilling portrayal of Pennywise in the 2017 movie “It”. The unique and otherworldly nature of Skarsgård’s Pennywise was so distinct that he often had to perform many of his own stunts for the film, as no one else could mimic his movements quite like him. This included physically executing the character’s signature lazy eye tic without any additional effects.
As far as perfect casting decisions go, Skarsgård as Pennywise is right up there with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. While it’s up for debate whether either “It” chapter ranks among his best films, the first one in particular is the definitive Bill Skarsgård movie and a must-watch for any of his fans — as long as they don’t mind the nightmares.
