As a seasoned entertainment journalist with years of red carpet experience, I must say that the events of 2024 were nothing short of spectacular! From transforming Hollywood Boulevard into Rome for the Gladiator II premiere to recreating the thrilling world of Squid Game for its second season, these events truly brought excitement and immersion to a whole new level.
At a movie premiere, it’s common to see celebrities shining brightly, but an exceptional stunt on opening day is not always easy to come by. Fortunately, several production studios have stepped up their game this year, elevating their events in unique ways. For instance, at the premiere of “The Fall Guy,” they actually had stuntmen performing daring feats right in front of the camera backdrop (step-and-repeat). Similarly, outside “MaXXXine” they hired actors to protest, adding an extra layer of intrigue. Lastly, for the release of “Squid Game,” they organized a fan competition where winners could attend the screening, offering a more immersive experience.
In “Planet of the Apes’ Kingdom,” they introduced apes riding horses, “Gladiator II” converted Hollywood Boulevard into a replica of The Colosseum, and Glen Powell claimed his parents were the ones who harassed him at the “Hit Man” premiere event.
In the whirlwind of events on the crimson carpets throughout 2024, I’d like to share my top picks from THR for the most thrilling, extravagant moments that graced Tinseltown. These moments were brimming with excitement and drama, and you won’t want to miss the captivating videos!
‘Kung Fu Panda 4’
In March, Jack Black marked the debut of the fourth Kung Fu Panda movie by joining forces with his co-stars Bryan Cranston, Awkwafina, James Hong, and Ke Huy Quan at The Grove. The grand event started off with Black and his bandmate Kyle Gass performing a dance routine to their rendition of “Baby One More Time” while filming a music video on the red carpet. This was followed by a traditional Dragon dance.

Black didn’t hold back his iconic moves during photo shoots and interviews on the red carpet, even giving a kiss and a kick to THR. To wrap up the event, Black, known for voicing the main character Po, climbed aboard The Grove’s trolley to greet fans, before the cast continued their journey through the shopping center towards the theater for the screening.

‘The Fall Guy’
Universal’s tribute to stunt performers was appropriately named “the most thrilling premiere of the year” at its April event, as excitement filled every corner. To begin with, a stunt performer leapt from a platform onto Hollywood Boulevard, while motorcycles roared down the red carpet. Shortly after, lead actor Ryan Gosling was snapped with two of his stand-ins, only to have them whisked away through the photograph backdrop. As you moved further along, stunt performers engaged in combat and smashed through a shattered window, bringing great joy to co-star Emily Blunt.

At a moment when it appeared the performances had reached their conclusion, Gosling unexpectedly vanished from the red carpet. Later on, he reappeared, accompanying Saturday Night Live’s Mikey Day, both dressed up as characters from Beavis and Butt-Head, a role inspired by their SNL skit from the previous month.

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’
In its May premiere, the latest iteration of the Planet of the Apes movie sprang to life during the 20th Century, with awe-inspiring apes gracefully riding horses along Hollywood Boulevard’s red carpet. This daring stunt was part of a shrewd marketing strategy by the studio; they had previously positioned lifelike apes in significant urban areas prior to the film’s launch. The movie featured performances from Owen Teague, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and Freya Allan.

‘Hit Man’
Glen Powell’s captivating charm might be considered a unique kind of performance, which he showcased during his promotional activities for both “Hit Man” and “Twisters” this year. For the Netflix comedy, he playfully enlisted his parents to tease him with signs at the Austin premiere of “Hit Man” in May; in July, his dog Brisket became a significant figure in the “Twisters” media tour, making a red carpet appearance alongside the cast in Los Angeles.

‘The Garfield Movie’
At the premiere of “The Garfield Movie” in Los Angeles in May, Sony not only gave a warm welcome to Garfield but also left an imprint of his paw prints at the famous TCL Chinese Theater, symbolizing his enduring presence. The film’s stars, including Chris Pratt, Hannah Waddingham, and creator Jim Davis, were present to mark the occasion and safeguard the furry friend’s legacy.

‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’
At the premiere of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” in L.A. back in May, it was none other than Will Smith who made a grand entrance. He rode onto Hollywood Boulevard atop a double-deck bus. Accompanied by his co-star Martin Lawrence and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Will Smith held a microphone as he performed rap music and pumped up the excited crowd gathered below.

‘Inside Out 2’
Stepping into the limelight for the Los Angeles premiere of Inside Out 2 in June, Hollywood Boulevard morphed into a vibrant carnival, complete with jugglers and performers swarming around the El Capitan Theatre. Giant representations of the movie’s emotions were also out and about on the red carpet, striking poses alongside stars like Amy Poehler, Maya Hawke, and Ayo Edebiri. As a gamer, I can only imagine how surreal it must have been to be there amidst all that excitement!

‘MaXXXine’
For the L.A. premiere of “MaXXXine” in June, A24 opted for an unusual strategy by hiring actors posing as protesters to demonstrate on the red carpet with cries such as “hey hey, ho ho, Maxine has got to go” and “horror equals porn.” They also brandished signs reading phrases like “Hollywood is a playground of Satan” and “our children deserve better”; the movie takes place in 1980s Hollywood and centers around adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx, portrayed by Mia Goth, who ultimately achieves her big break.

‘Gladiator II’
During the Los Angeles premiere of Gladiator II in November, Hollywood Boulevard was converted into ancient Rome. The famous TCL Chinese Theatre was disguised to resemble the Colosseum. Additionally, statues and fire cauldrons were scattered along the red carpet, accompanied by life-size images of stars like Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, and Pedro Pascal.

‘Squid Game’
Netflix made the hit series “Squid Game” a reality in Los Angeles before the second season’s launch, attracting hordes of enthusiastic fans who dressed up in the distinctive green tracksuits to take part in a competition for invites to an exclusive preview showing. The winter debut event included a 5k race that incorporated challenges and a genuine rendition of “Red Light, Green Light,” as pink guards and the show’s cast looked on.
