As a seasoned comic book enthusiast who’s had the pleasure of traversing through countless realms and dimensions, I must say that each character you’ve introduced possesses an extraordinary power set that would make even the gods themselves tremble with awe.
For almost a century now, Marvel Comics has been present, evolving through various stages, and it’s been a creative hub for countless characters. Most of the superheroes we recognize from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) first appeared in the 1960s or later. With decades of experience, they’ve all undergone significant transformations.
The consistent factor in these characters, such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, and others, is that their power levels are generally quantified by Marvel Comics using a scale from 0 to 7 for attributes like durability, energy, combat skills, intellect, speed, and strength, ensuring they remain powerful and intriguing.
From my perspective as an avid fan, it’s fascinating to analyze combat strength using various metrics for characters. However, it’s essential to remember that these values have been adjusted throughout the years for each character. As we stand in the 2020s, here are 15 Marvel Comics superheroes who currently hold the title of strongest, though future changes might slightly alter their positions on this list.
Franklin Richards
Franklin Richards, the eldest child of Reed and Sue Richards from the Fantastic Four, has an extraordinary origin. Unlike most other beings of superior human evolution, Franklin’s powers manifested much earlier, even before he reached puberty. This unusual trait can be attributed to the cosmic rays that bestowed his parents with their extraordinary abilities, thereby granting Franklin unparalleled, cosmic-level power at birth.
From the get-go, I, a humble fan, have found myself awestruck by the boundless power of Franklin, who could casually reshape reality like a kid playing with toys. Remember when he transformed Galactus into his herald? Well, that was just a taste of what this extraordinary being is capable of. In the vast Marvel Universe, Franklin has navigated through time, showcasing remarkable psychic prowess, and existing both as a mature entity and a child-like form. Needless to say, he’s anything but your average superhero.
In the past, Franklin would undoubtedly have been ranked among the best Marvel superheroes; however, that era has passed. In 2016, Marvel decided to weaken or ‘nerf’ Franklin by stripping him of his Omega-level mutant status and rewriting him as a human. Although he still possesses immense energy and intelligence, represented by sevens, all other aspects of his abilities are now set to one, with no fighting skills at all.
Black Bolt
Blackagar Boltagon, more commonly known as Black Bolt, is the sovereign ruler of the Inhumans, an extraordinary race of humans genetically engineered by the Kree in ancient times. They resided on the Moon, which proved beneficial since Black Bolt’s power is such that it’s hazardous for him to be near anyone or anything that might provoke speech from him.
Black Bolt, an Inhuman, possesses a sonic-based superpower. When he utters a single word, it triggers an immense wave of energy, which can be as destructive as a nuclear blast, though he doesn’t necessarily have to shout loudly to cause such devastation. Indeed, his power is staggeringly potent.
Due to his capacity to inflict extensive harm simply by speaking, he typically chooses to remain silent. This self-restraint and control were instilled in him through rigorous training during his upbringing. In essence, Black Bolt resembles a nuclear weapon; it’s safer for him not to be used, which is why his ranking is low despite possessing an incredibly destructive power.
Scarlet Witch
Over the years, Wanda Maximoff, better known as the Scarlet Witch, has undergone significant transformations. Initially, she was a villain, but later joined the ranks of Marvel’s heroes and became an Avenger. For much of her past, she demonstrated remarkable prowess, firing Hex Bolts at foes, yet her powers have grown and adapted over time. As Wanda grew stronger, she eventually acquired the ability to manipulate reality with a mere utterance.
On several occasions, including the instance when she deprived almost all mutants of their powers with a simple utterance of “No more mutants,” this occurred. Other occurrences brought about worldwide changes, but Wanda struggled to master her power during this period. Despite wielding godlike might, her life experiences left deep scars, and her control over anything was shaky at best.
In the 2016 film “Scarlet Witch,” Wanda embarks on the Path of the Sorceress to discover who has tampered with magical forces globally. As time passes, she comes to understand that this magic has had a detrimental effect on her physical and mental well-being, leaving her as merely a semblance of her past self. Consequently, her powers have been diminished significantly, rendering her far less divine than she was during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Hyperion
Marcus Milton, known as Hyperion, is a captivating figure because he wasn’t originally part of Marvel Universe’s main timeline on Earth-616. However, his versions from various universes have interacted with that reality multiple times since his debut in “The Avengers” #69 back in 1969. In terms of power and abilities, Hyperion bears a resemblance to DC Comics’ Superman, which was a deliberate design choice.
Originally, Hyperion was depicted as a villain, but with numerous iterations existing today, he’s also evolved into a potent superhero. Across all versions, Hyperion possesses extraordinary physical capabilities such as strength, speed, endurance, reflexes, acute senses, toughness, and agility. Additionally, he can manipulate heat vision and fly. The Earth-712 version of Hyperion, as illustrated, boasts a few additional abilities.
Hyperion boasts remarkable regenerative powers, the ability to see atoms, and enjoys an extended lifespan. In terms of his stats, Hyperion’s durability is rated as high as 7, but his strength is only 6, agility is 5, and the rest of his abilities fall between 2 and 4. He can withstand a lot of punishment and keep fighting, yet he may not measure up to some of Marvel Universe’s top-tier heroes.
Sentry
Robert “Bob” Reynolds, known as Sentry, is an extraordinary character in that Marvel portrayed him as if he had been around since the 1960s when he was first introduced in 2000. This fictional backstory was devised to support his narrative, which featured Dr. Strange erasing everyone’s memories of Sentry to safeguard them from his villainous persona, the Void.
Sentry possesses an extraordinary array of powers, notably due to his being referred to as having the power equivalent to a million exploding suns. This immense energy makes him virtually unlimited in terms of strength, imagining Superman but with a millionfold greater might, and that sums up Sentry’s capabilities.
Absolutely, there’s a trade-off: Bob struggles with severe agoraphobia and other mental health problems that greatly restrict his capabilities. On the flip side, the Void possesses the power to annihilate the entire universe, which means Sentry is tasked with holding it back. Despite being extraordinarily powerful, Sentry’s actions are restrained at any given time, solely dependent on Bob’s mental condition.
Captain Marvel
In comic books, Captain Marvel’s background differs significantly from what we see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Her story is complex and has evolved over time, taking on various names before she became known as Captain Marvel in 2012. During this journey, her powers grew to cosmic proportions, reaching a level of power that surpasses the energy output of a star.
Currently, Carol no longer possesses her energy-powered Binary abilities, but Captain Marvel certainly holds her own and retains considerable powers. Similar to her MCU version, Captain Marvel is packed with superhuman talents: she can control, collect, and emit energy, she can fly at high speeds and recover swiftly from injuries, and she has a foresight ability, making her an advantageous combatant.
Captain Marvel exhibits high levels of durability and energy, placing her among the top tier of similar superheroes. She scores five in speed and strength, four in combat abilities, and three in intellect, resulting in an incredibly powerful character overall.
Adam Warlock
In the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, the character Adam Warlock deviates significantly from his comic book version, who is markedly more mature and potent. Unlike popular belief, Adam Warlock, despite being powerful, doesn’t perfectly encapsulate that term. Similar to other Marvel Comics superheroes, Adam Warlock harbors a dark aspect within him – figuratively speaking.
With Magnus, his malevolent counterpart, held in check, Warlock transforms into an extraordinarily potent cosmic superhero. He’s squared off against Thanos on multiple occasions, emerging victorious each time. In the comic book rendition of “The Infinity Saga,” he played a pivotal role and even wielded the Infinity Gauntlet. The character has a rich backstory, but in essence, he’s an exceptional leader of heroes and a formidable combatant.
Adam Warlock possesses an array of extraordinary abilities beyond those common among superhumans. He’s essentially immortal and adept at wielding Quantum magic. In essence, he embodies a cosmic entity, often finding himself in the thick of galaxy-threatening or even universe-wide perils. As such, he holds considerable significance within the comic book realm, outranking many Earth-based superheroes in terms of importance and power.
Hulk
Initially, when Bruce Banner morphed into the colossal Hulk, Marvel Comics introduced a character with almost indescribable might. Admittedly, it took some time to fully develop the character, but over the years, the Hulk’s physical prowess and mental capacity have fluctuated.
In essence, The Hulk represents Bruce Banner’s multiple personality disorder, often preferring solitude. This theme is recurrent in his comic book adventures, although on occasion, the Hulk has been part of a superhero squad. Regarding his strength, it knows no bounds – the more enraged he becomes, the stronger he grows. During the “World War Hulk” saga, The Hulk’s power reached such heights that he earned the nickname “World Breaker Hulk.
To put it simply, the Hulk we’ve seen recently is the most powerful incarnation yet, but his power levels have dropped since then. Nevertheless, he remains one of the mightiest characters in the Marvel Universe, boasting a durability and strength rating of seven. In fact, the Hulk can casually lift 100 tons, and there seems to be no limit to his strength, making the phrase “You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry,” from Banner, more accurate than ever.
Thor
One way to rephrase this in natural and easy-to-read language is: Thor Odinson, also known as the God of Thunder, is one of the mightiest beings in the Marvel Universe. He defends both Asgard and our world (Earth), and was among the original members of the Avengers. Over time, this character has undergone numerous transformations; however, when he claims to be a god, it’s not an exaggeration.
Thor has numerous extraordinary powers, such as manipulating the elements, flying, exhibiting superhuman strength, nimbleness, swiftness, and more. Thor shares a similar level of strength with the Hulk, but unlike the Green Titan, his power doesn’t stem from his emotions.
Over the last few years, Thor has been stripped of his right to use Mjolnir and relinquished the title of Thor due to a loss of worthiness. This reduction in power was followed by a transfer of many of his thunderous abilities to Jane Foster. However, he eventually regained his worthiness and now ranks among the top in most superhero stats. As Asgardians grow stronger with age, future depictions of Thor promise to be even more formidable compared to his contemporary version. Despite this, modern Thor remains one of the Marvel Universe’s mightiest superheroes.
Dr. Strange
When a tragic event caused Dr. Stephen Strange to lose his medical skills, he turned to The Ancient One for guidance, learning the art of magic instead. With remarkable aptitude, Dr. Strange mastered the craft of casting spells, eventually becoming the Grand Master of Mystic Arts and Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme. In this role, he safeguards our world from supernatural dangers, such as beings from other dimensions, demons, and Marvel’s depiction of Satan, Mephisto.
As a diehard fan, I’ve got to say, being Dr. Strange puts me in possession of some mind-blowing magical artifacts. Among them are unique pieces that pack quite a punch. I can hop dimensions at will, take on any magical or non-magical foe, and thanks to my Cloak of Levitation, I can float like a feather whenever I feel like it! But here’s the real kicker: I can step out of my physical body and traverse the cosmos freely as my Astral Form.
In the “World War Hulk” saga, Dr. Strange adapted to combat the Hulk and maintained a fight for a brief period. Throughout various stories, his magic powers have fluctuated due to their reliance on his prodigious intellect and spell-casting abilities. However, in “The Last Days of Magic”, he came close to losing all of his magical prowess, though thankfully, it proved temporary.
Hercules
In my perspective as an ardent fan, Hercules, the legendary Greek demigod, has stepped into the present and joined the Avengers. While he’s had his fair share of skirmishes with Thor in comic lore, make no mistake, he embodies the heroic spirit that echoes the tales of old. Brought forth from the annals of time by Immortus, Hercules swiftly carved out a substantial role among today’s superheroes.
Hercules possesses a range of extraordinary abilities such as super strength, agility, resilience, toughness, endurance, and speedy reflexes. Moreover, he has an incredible ability to recover fast, boasts near-invincibility, and is immortal. Among the Olympians, Hercules stands out as the most powerful character, a claim that also makes him one of the strongest Avengers.
As a gamer embodying the mighty Hercules, the God of Raw Power, I stand toe-to-toe with some of the most formidable beings in the Marvel Universe. Dishing out pain to my adversaries comes as easily as drawing breath, and there’s seldom a limit to what I can inflict upon them. I’ve laid waste to monstrosities like the Abomination and the Chaos King, and many others have felt the brunt of my strength. My power gauge is set at seven, much like the Hulk, but just as he knows no bounds, neither does my might.
Jean Grey
Initially, Jean Grey wasn’t an extremely powerful mutant like she is now. In the first issue of “X-Men,” she was known as Marvel Girl, possessing decent telekinetic abilities. As time went on, her powers grew and expanded, much like other superheroes. However, a few changes in the storyline later showed that Professor X had been suppressing a large portion of Jean’s powers to keep them under control – a strategy that ultimately didn’t work out.
In the end, Jean was chosen by the potent cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force. This force replicated her physically, making her one of Marvel Universe’s most powerful beings. Regrettably, the Phoenix turned into the Dark Phoenix and wreaked havoc, including obliterating an alien race’s solar system where they lived. The Dark Phoenix perished, but Jean was revived, returning her to the X-Men.
Jean’s abilities might not reach Phoenix-like intensity, but fundamentally, she is among the most potent mutants globally. Her attributes demonstrate this, as she boasts sevens across durability, energy, combat prowess, and speed, with her intelligence at a three and physical strength at a two. There aren’t many beings that can challenge Jean Grey, even among those discussed in this article.
Blue Marvel
Dr. Adam Brashear served as a scientist until an experiment of his went off, transforming him into a mobile source of antimatter energy and granting him incredible abilities. He donned a suit, assumed the identity of Blue Marvel, and became one of the mightiest superheroes within the Marvel Universe. In the 1960s, he knelt as instructed by President Kennedy when his torn costume exposed that he was African American.
Blue Marvel’s ethnicity plays a significant role in his Marvel Comics storyline, and for some time, he stepped away from being a superhero due to racial strife within the country. While living as an ordinary citizen, Dr. Brashear utilized his extraordinary intelligence to aid humanity. Later on, he resumed wearing his costume to protect the world from wrongdoers. However, most of his efforts were directed towards neutralizing threats in the Neutral Zone.
Blue Marvel boasts immense power, scoring a 7 in his strength rating. His intelligence and durability are also rated at 6 each. He possesses average abilities in speed and energy projection, earning a 5 for both, and his fighting skills are rated at a 4. His array of superpowers is extensive, including effortlessly lifting 100 tons, mastery over energy and antimatter, near-invincibility, and an elongated lifespan.
Silver Surfer
In his debut in “Fantastic Four” issue 48, Norrin Radd voluntarily took on the role of Galactus’ herald to protect his planet. He traversed the universe on a silver surfboard, marking planets for his superior to devour until he encountered Earth. However, the Fantastic Four managed to persuade the Silver Surfer to collaborate with them, and he eventually rebelled against Galactus, saving Earth from destruction before becoming trapped on it.
In time, the Silver Surfer ascended back to the cosmos, where he stands as a mighty cosmic hero, battling evil wherever it lurks. When Galactus transformed Norrin Radd into the Silver Surfer, he bestowed upon him the Power Cosmic – an unstable, vast cosmic force that grants him strength, speed, durability, and power exceeding most cosmic entities in the universe.
The Silver Surfer’s characteristics include a rating of 7 for durability, energy, and speed, with a strength of 6, fighting skills of 5, and an intelligence rating of 4. This places him significantly above most superheroes in the Marvel Universe, as his powers are incredibly broad, allowing him to navigate through stars, travel faster than light, launch cosmic blasts, and perform numerous other extraordinary feats.
Legion
David Haller, often called Legion, isn’t your typical Omega-level mutant; he’s almost like a single individual possessing the collective power of over a thousand such extraordinary beings. This is due to the fact that Legion suffers from dissociative identity disorder, giving rise to more than a thousand distinct personalities, each with unique abilities.
Legion possesses an extraordinary power that allows him to summon any superability on demand, enabling him to take on virtually any adversary. His arsenal of powers is immense, though extensive to enumerate, it encompasses the power to manipulate time and reality, assimilate a person’s mind into himself, and many other capabilities.
In the comics, numerous aspects of Legion’s character have been fully developed, and each persona possesses significant power, making him one of the strongest mutants and most powerful characters within the Marvel Universe. However, his mental health issues often prevent him from being fully combat-ready. Nevertheless, it’s clear that despite these constraints, Legion exhibits an extraordinary level of power; this is underscored by his impressive stats, all of which peak at seven.
