As a long-time fan of the Dragon Ball franchise and someone who has followed the series since its humble beginnings, I must say that the evolution of Saiyan transformations has been nothing short of remarkable. From the original Super Saiyan to the latest iterations like Super Saiyan Blue and God of Destruction forms, each new transformation adds an exciting layer to the universe Akira Toriyama created.
Originating from the late manga artist Akira Toriyama, who passed away in March 2024 at age 68, “Dragon Ball” has become an undeniable worldwide sensation. First appearing in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1984, it was soon followed by an anime adaptation a few years later. The Dragon Ball multimedia universe experienced exponential growth after its initial launch, resulting in numerous sequel series, video games, action figures, and live-action adaptations – including a critically panned Hollywood film in 2009.
The storyline of “Dragon Ball” draws inspiration from the well-known Chinese tale, “Journey to the West,” featuring the Monkey King Sun Wukong. In this anime series, the protagonist, Son Goku, shares monkey traits (like having a tail) and extraordinary powers. In the subsequent series, “Dragon Ball Z,” it’s unveiled that Goku belongs to a potent alien lineage called Saiyans; malevolent Saiyans (headed by fan-loved character Vegeta) invade Earth with the intention of taking over.
Over the course of the “Dragon Ball” series, various iterations or transformations of the Saiyans were introduced, including the iconic Super Saiyan form. These characters became so potent that Goku engaged in battle with a literal Deity of Destruction! It’s worth noting that even stronger versions of Saiyans can be found in non-canonical “Dragon Ball” content such as memes, fan fiction, artwork, and movies that were later de-canonized by the original creator. Here we present a compilation of the most powerful unofficial Super Saiyan forms.
Super Saiyan Blanco (fan art)
One of the most popular unauthorized Super Saiyan forms started out as a jokey meme that still persists to this day: The super powerful Super Saiyan Blanco, which has inspired countless impressive works of fan art. Most of the art depicts Goku’s muscular son Gohan (who was introduced in the second chapter of the “Dragon Ball Z” manga) with white spiky hair. As for power level, there are some memes that state Super Saiyan Blanco’s power is as high as “infinity+ 1,” which would make this one of the most powerful Saiyan forms ever.
Initially, Super Saiyan White Gohan was conceived as a humorous spin-off following Gohan’s peak power level. Swiftly after, fans created a wiki page for this character, who is depicted with white hair and nicknamed “GODhan” and “CHADhan,” inspired by the “Based Chad Meme.” The wiki entry also attributes to him the quote, “Leave the great father to me,” a phrase borrowed from a popular fan comic on Imgur. It’s worth noting that the name Super Saiyan Blanco derives from the Spanish word for ‘white,’ and this moniker has since stuck as the common name for this meme character, thanks to the widespread popularity of “Dragon Ball” in Spanish-speaking communities and regions.
Super Saiyan 5 (Dragon Ball AF)
In simpler terms, after the original “Dragon Ball” series, there were several follow-ups that added one or two letters, like “Dragon Ball Z” or “Dragon Ball GT”. At some point in the early 2000s, a group of artists and internet users created a humorous fan-made sequel called “Dragon Ball AF”, with the title suggesting it was a joke series produced as an April Fools’ Day prank.
Starting in 1999, a drawing of Super Saiyan 5 Goku by David Montiel Franco (alias Tablos.AF) was published in the May issue of Hobby Consolas, a Spanish video game magazine. This artwork, mistakenly believed to be official due to the conclusion of “Dragon Ball GT” some years earlier, sparked various fan sites. Since then, numerous artists and writers have contributed their unique narratives to what is known as “Dragon Ball AF,” often with conflicting lore.
In an unauthorized Super Saiyan mode, Goku appears larger and boasts broader shoulders than normal. Similar to Super Saiyan Blanco, he sports long, flowing white hair. This form also gives him a more beastly appearance: His skin turns pink, and his muscular body is adorned with thick, white fur that resembles an ape’s. Even his traditional orange gi has been replaced in this transformation.
Super Saiyan 6 (Dragon Ball AF)
Despite Goku or any other Dragon Ball character never officially transforming into Super Saiyan 5, the version of Goku and other Saiyans in “Dragon Ball AF” eventually achieved Super Saiyan 6, also known as Ultimate Saiyan. This new form shares some resemblance with the Super Saiyan 4 form from Dragon Ball GT, but the main distinction lies in their color scheme. Unlike the black spiky hair and red fur of the Super Saiyan 4 form, the Super Saiyan 6 form features a classic glowing yellow for both the hair and fur.
Without a doubt, this Saiyan form is among the strongest ever, whether it’s canonical or not. In the original storyline, Goku struggled against Beerus, the God of Destruction from Universe 7, and despite putting up a valiant effort, he ended up losing. However, in “Dragon Ball AF,” when Goku eventually transforms into Super Saiyan 6, he easily defeats Beerus without breaking a sweat. Given that this form is said to be 10,000 times stronger than Super Saiyan 5 according to the Dragon Ball Fanon wiki, this isn’t unexpected. However, one of the drawbacks of this form is that it alters the characters’ personalities, making them overly confident and reckless, which can be dangerous when dealing with such immense destructive power.
Gray Great Ape (Dragon Ball AF)
In the unconventional series known as “Dragon Ball AF”, there’s a well-known and potent Super Saiyan form called the Gray Great Ape. In the main “Dragon Ball” universe, Saiyans from Universe 7 can transform into colossal, monster-like Great Apes during a full moon, similar to werewolves. This transformation was initially depicted in the 21st chapter of the original “Dragon Ball” manga, titled “Full Moon”, and subsequently incorporated into the anime. Later “Dragon Ball” series continued this concept, even introducing new versions of the Great Ape transformations. One such variant is the Golden Great Ape, which was initially glimpsed in a flashback during “Dragon Ball Z”, but it didn’t truly debut until “Dragon Ball GT”.
In the series “Dragon Ball AF,” the fan-created Gray Great Ape was designed to be significantly stronger than its Golden counterpart. Reflecting its name, this Gray Great Ape resembles other Great Ape forms but sports a coat of silver-gray fur instead of the usual brown or gold. In the storyline of “Dragon Ball AF,” only Saiyans with tails and the capacity to attain Super Saiyan 4 can morph into the incredibly potent Gray Great Ape. As stated on the Infinite Dragon Ball wiki, this transformation occurs when a Saiyan witnesses an entire galaxy, and it yields power levels that far surpass those of the Super Saiyan 4 form, while retaining all the abilities of a Great Ape but with the intensity cranked up even higher.
Super Saiyan 100 (fan art)
The Super Saiyan 100 transformation originated as fan art that tricked numerous “Dragon Ball” enthusiasts during the early internet era, gaining a level of popularity similar to what we now call viral. This fan art portrays Goku with an exceptionally long mane, bordering on caricature. In reality, his over-the-top, spiky platinum hair in this form has led people to draw comparisons between him and a well-known character from Sonic the Hedgehog series in Japan.
In simpler terms, the exaggerated and somewhat humorous Super Saiyan 100 transformation appears to satirize the escalating power levels that were frequently observed in the “Dragon Ball” series, particularly during the era following “Dragon Ball Z.” It often felt to many viewers as if the characters were primarily engaged in posing, building power for extended periods, and inventing new forms and transformations. The Super Saiyan 100 form seems to be a natural progression of this trend.
For an extended period, the origin of the initial artwork was unidentified; however, it’s now being said (via Reddit) that it stemmed from a fan-created web comic by Polish artist Artur Sadlos. The impact of Super Saiyan 100 continues to resonate among fans and creators: Just a couple of years back, YouTuber Lord Aizen shared a widely viewed fan animation depicting the Super Saiyan 100 form, which has garnered more than 15 million views.
Goku/Jesus fusion (fan art)
In the captivating world of Dragon Ball, a concept I can’t get enough of is the “fusion.” This unique mechanic, showcased from Dragon Ball Z and throughout all the series, allows two combatants to merge into one formidable entity. It goes like this: they perform a Fusion Dance while donning magical earrings, and voila! They become one, blending their personalities, skills, and sometimes even names. For example, the fusion of Goku and Vegeta is known as either “Gogeta” or “Vegeto.” It’s fascinating to see fans concoct fusion combinations, even merging Saiyan warriors with other mighty beings—even some divine ones. As a gamer, I can’t help but wonder what other extraordinary fusions are yet to be discovered!
One such fusion, posted as fan art on DeviantArt by artist DAIZ3, is a fusion between Goku’s Super Saiyan Rosé form and Jesus Christ. While not known for his fighting prowess, Christian writings tell us that Jesus had powers that included healing the sick, raising the dead, turning water to wine, and resurrecting himself. Of course, Goku has also come back from the dead in “Dragon Ball” canon, but there’s no denying that a fusion with Jesus would make him an even stronger character. Fans have debated the outcome of a Goku versus Jesus battle on the r/whowouldwin subreddit on numerous occasions, but, thanks to this just-for-fun form, we now know what a combination of the pair might look like.
Karoly (Dragon Ball Fusions)
In the video game titled “Dragon Ball Fusions,” you’ll find unique, non-canonical character mixes from the Dragon Ball universe. This game was launched for the Nintendo 3DS back in 2016. Unlike many Dragon Ball games prior to it, which were primarily fighting games or beat-em-ups, this one offers a turn-based strategy experience. Additionally, unlike other Dragon Ball games that aimed to replicate the stories of their source manga/anime, “Dragon Ball Fusions” presents an entirely original narrative for players.
The storyline revolves around Tekka, a character you can customize, who summons the wish-granting dragon Shenron using the Dragon Balls. His wish is for the ultimate tournament, which then sees Shenron create a special dimension that gathers all “Dragon Ball” characters across different timeframes into a single setting. This setup enables players to accumulate and merge various “Dragon Ball” figures in numerous inventive and imaginative combinations.
As a passionate fan, I’d say the most formidable non-canon fusion has got to be Karoly! Picture this: it’s the fusion of Kakarot, Goku’s Saiyan name that Vegeta affectionately calls him, and Broly, the crowd-pleasing, super-powerful Saiyan from the “Dragon Ball” OVA films. What makes Karoly stand out is his unique blend of characters’ Super Saiyan and Legendary Super Saiyan forms, evident in his hair that boasts a mix of yellow and green. Given that Goku and Broly are two of the most powerful Saiyans we’ve ever seen, their combined strength when fused is simply unmatched.
Super Saiyan 4 (Dragon Ball GT)
This is a somewhat controversial pick, but allow us to explain. The status of “Dragon Ball GT” as canon has long been debated, because, after “Dragon Ball Z,” creator Akira Toriyama more or less left the series. However, Toei Animation continued the “Dragon Ball” story with the much-derided “Dragon Ball GT” series. While Toriyama consulted a bit on the show, and even helped design some of the characters, he still more-or-less took a backseat on “Dragon Ball GT” due to the fact that the series was not based on any previous manga he created. To complicate matters, Toriyama returned to the “Dragon Ball” universe with “Dragon Ball Super.” The new series was released as a manga in 2015 and was adapted as an anime that same year.
It’s worth mentioning that several plot points from “Dragon Ball Super” seem to contradict what was established in “Dragon Ball GT”. This has led some fans to question the validity of certain powerful transformations in “GT”, such as Super Saiyan 4. If it turns out that “GT” is not considered canon, then Super Saiyan 4 would no longer hold its previous status as the most potent form in the “Dragon Ball” series. Nevertheless, even if “GT” is not canon, Super Saiyan 4 remains an incredibly powerful transformation, which is why it’s included on our list.
