The Acolyte Showrunner Explains Why Season 1 Ended With That Huge Cameo, And I Like Her Way Of Thinking

As a long-time fan of Star Wars and someone who has followed the lore and Expanded Universe closely, I was absolutely thrilled to see Yoda make a surprise appearance in the Season 1 finale of The Acolyte on Disney+. I have to admit, when I first heard that Rebecca Henderson had misled us about Yoda’s absence from the show, I was disappointed. But after watching the finale and understanding why Leslye Headland made that decision, I completely agree with her reasoning.

Warning: SPOILERS for The Acolyte are ahead!

In “The Acolyte,” many characters were new to the galaxy far, far away, but some were familiar faces. Notable exceptions included Vernestra Rwoh from High Republic literature and a young Ki-Adi Mundi in “Day.” However, these pale in comparison to the shocking appearances in the Season 1 finale. Darth Plagueis made his first appearance in canon nearly twenty years after being mentioned in “Revenge of the Sith,” and Star Wars fans with Disney+ subscriptions were treated to a silent cameo from Yoda. Showrunner Leslye Headland explained why the season ended with this surprise twist, and her reasoning resonates with me.

It was previously announced by Rebecca Henderson, who portrays Vernestra Rwoh, that Yoda would not be present in “The Acolyte” Season 1. However, in an interview with EW, showrunner Leslye Headland revealed that keeping this information hidden helped to create a surprise effect, as Yoda’s appearance in the Season 1 finale served to counteract the earlier hint of Plagueis in “Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.” In her own words: “[Yoda’s presence] balanced the scales after the Plagueis tease in ‘The Last Jedi.'”

To introduce Plagueis effectively, it was essential to present a powerful counterbalance from the light side. Given my understanding of Plagueis and the Sith’s future developments, having such an influential figure on the light side seemed necessary to maintain balance. Therefore, it felt only natural to me.

Leslye Headland explained that throughout “The Acolyte,” Vernestra frequently uses the phrase “tip the scales.” In the Season 1 finale, her encounter with Yoda illustrates this idea, providing a contrast after a brief appearance of Plagueis, who later trains Palpatine. This balances out the dark themes in the show, such as the deaths of Yoru Furransidar and Jaxi Longo in “Night.” Given that “The Acolyte” is set during this era with a focus on the Jedi, introducing Yoda served as an effective way to introduce some lightness.

In the last moments of “The Acolyte” Season 1 finale, Yoda was visited by Vernestra Rwoh. Though it’s not clear what she intended to discuss, this episode hinted at a connection between her and Henderson’s character, who is revealed as Qimir, or “The Stranger.” However, his true identity remains undisclosed. Later, Vernestra accused the late Sol of committing the murders Qimir and Mae were involved in. Now, she plans to use Mae, whose memories have been mostly erased, to locate her former apprentice. Though the Jedi Order believes Sol was responsible for killing Indira, Torbin, Kelnacca, and others, there’s a strong possibility that Vernestra will reveal the truth to Yoda under confidentiality, making him a significant figure in the upcoming season.

Leslye Headland hasn’t received any updates about the possible production of “The Acolyte” Season 2 within the “Star Wars” franchise. As soon as we have information on its addition to the lineup of upcoming “Star Wars” movies and TV shows, we will share it with you. For now, “Skeleton Crew” is the next series in the franchise that’s scheduled to be released, but a specific premiere date for it on the 2024 TV calendar has yet to be announced.
