The ADL Scolds Elon Musk for Nazi Puns: “The Holocaust Is Not a Joke”

The Anti-Defamation League has criticized Elon Musk, following their previous support for him earlier this week.

ADL Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Greenblatt, responded on Twitter/X following Elon Musk’s Holocaust-themed jokes posted on Thursday. This was after the SpaceX and Tesla CEO made those jokes as a response to criticisms of his contentious crowd salute during President Trump’s inauguration event on Monday.

Greenblatt has reiterated this many times previously, and he does so again now: the Holocaust was an unprecedented atrocity, and any attempt to trivialize it is both inappropriate and hurtful. Greenblatt emphasizes, ‘The Holocaust is not a subject for jest.’

The official ADL account also shared the post.

The comment was a response to Elon Musk’s post containing a string of puns related to notorious Third Reich figures: “Be careful when making Nazi allegations! Some people will swallow anything! Stop Hitler-ing your opponents! He/Himmler would have been his pronouns! I bet you didn’t see that coming 😂

On the evening of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, a video of Elon Musk performing a passionate one-armed salute went viral. Later, when faced with criticism, he responded dismissively, writing, “Honestly, they need to come up with better tactics than that.” He further commented, “The ‘everyone is Hitler’ accusation is just so worn out now.

The ADL acknowledged the potential concern over Musk’s gesture, choosing instead to interpret it as an exuberant action rather than a Nazi salute: “It appears Elon Musk made an awkward, excited gesture, not a Nazi salute. We understand that people are on edge right now, so let’s extend some understanding to each other in this situation.

Instead of stirring up debate, Musk could have resolved the controversy sooner by providing a thoughtful response when questions about his unusual social media gesture arose after his speech. However, his casual attitude towards answering questions and criticism has kept this topic in the spotlight for three days now, continuing to spark discussions and debates.
