The Amazing Race Is Making A Big Change In Season 37, And I Already Like It Way More Than The Other Change The Show Made Recently

Following a prolonged hiatus, it seems that “The Amazing Race” is almost set to make its comeback on our television screens, and we’ve recently discovered an exciting alteration for Season 37. This fresh twist in the show’s challenges is part of the recent experiments, but let me tell you, I’m genuinely more enthusiastic about this one compared to some others.

What Is The Fork In The Road Twist?

As a movie critic, I’d say it’s fascinating to envision “The Amazing Race” transformed into an interactive Choose Your Own Adventure storybook! Instead of following one fixed route, teams could explore multiple paths during the travel segment of their journey.

In the past, the show has incorporated continuation legs and presented choices at Detours. However, taking this concept further would make the race even more intriguing, offering unpredictable twists and turns that keep viewers on the edge of their seats!

In Season 37, we’re witnessing another shift as Phil Keoghan, the host, referred to it as a “refresh.” This show, already renowned for being one of TV’s best reality series, occasionally requires a bit of excitement, and that’s exactly what we’re getting. Teams will encounter a crossroads, which the show has dubbed the “Fork in the Road.” Essentially, they’ll be faced with two options, each likely presenting its own advantages and disadvantages. Keoghan described this twist as follows:

[Keoghan’s words] – “This is going to shake things up!

At a crossroads, the path you take can significantly impact your success or elimination. This season, as we’re in Season 37, expect the unexpected!

In a chat with TV Line, Phil Keoghan hinted that the upcoming twist will be quite spectacular, as at the conclusion of each branch, two teams will be sent home. He described the upcoming season, which is set to air next month in the 2025 TV schedule, as one filled with unexpected twists and turns, and he’s eagerly anticipating the thrilling excitement it promises.

Throughout the season, there will be moments that leave many surprised, with reactions similar to, ‘Whoa, hold up!’ or ‘Really?’

I’m not sure how it will unfold on television, but the plot twist sounds intriguing based on the summary. There’s always an element of unpredictability with TAR. Occasionally, contestants might find themselves on different flights, providing them an edge in time. On other occasions, they may reach challenges early, only to discover they have to wait until the next day before they can compete.

Taking a turn in the road could potentially steer some teams towards unfavorable decisions that may result in their elimination, but I believe it will add an exciting twist to the journey and do so in an unexpected manner. Moreover, if this approach proves unsuccessful, it’s not something the reality show is bound to carry on for a long time.

The Amazing Race Twist I Was Less Enamored With

In the latest seasons of The Amazing Race, there have been various twists such as alterations to flight schedules, mask usage rules, among others. A notable change was made a few seasons back when Phil Keoghan announced that elimination legs would no longer be part of the race. This trend has persisted through Season 35, Season 36 and is likely to carry on into Season 37.

At Paleyfest 2023, Showrunner Elise Doganieri mentioned that due to audience preference for a climactic ending in each episode, the show won’t be returning with a format change.

She stated that viewers were eagerly anticipating the elimination at the end of each episode. The lack of elimination is beneficial for the contestant as they avoid elimination, but it heightens tension among viewers because everyone is on edge, fearing elimination. This constant fear maintains a high level of excitement in every episode.

For years now, I’ve been a loyal fan of “The Amazing Race” since its debut season, but let me clarify something. While it’s true that including the non-elimination leg sometimes allowed a team that arguably shouldn’t have survived to carry on for another round or two, this could be frustrating at times. Conversely, there were instances where it was evident one team was significantly lagging behind the others in an episode. By maintaining the non-elimination leg, these episodes still had tension and suspense.

As a movie enthusiast, I find it far more intriguing to follow a team that could potentially stay in the competition, rather than one that’s already destined for elimination. Watching a show where the outcome is predictable or manipulated to create drama takes away from the excitement and suspense.

From my perspective, not having a non-elimination round simply reduces production costs since there’s no need to prepare additional episodes due to immediate eliminations. On the flip side, the Fork in the Road twist seems to be the opposite, as it results in two teams being eliminated per episode, potentially reducing the number of episodes needed to produce and saving money. I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out, but I do wonder if the show is making these decisions based on cost-effectiveness rather than the best interests of the competition.
