The Avengers: Doomsday Theory Could Perfectly Explain Chris Evans’ Casting

Well, as someone who’s been following Marvel since the days of my dad’s old comic books, I must say I’m both excited and confused by these recent developments. Chris Evans returning to the MCU? That’s not just Captain America we’re talking about here, it’s a symbol of heroism! But if he’s playing a villain or a different variant of Cap, well, that’s a twist even Hydra couldn’t have seen coming.

In July 2024, Marvel enthusiasts were taken aback when it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr., the man behind Iron Man, would reprise his role as Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday“. More recent reports from TheWrap suggest that Chris Evans has also joined the cast of the upcoming fifth Avengers movie. However, it’s uncertain whether he’ll reprise his role as Captain America as we know him. Fans were saddened by Steve Rogers’ farewell in “Avengers: Endgame” and given that Earth-616’s Cap is now a senior citizen, it seems unlikely that he will reclaim his shield from Sam Wilson. Instead, we might see an alternate version of Steve Rogers, and not one who is particularly admirable.

2016 brought a shocking revelation to readers of “Captain America: Steve Rogers” comic series: The patriotic hero, Captain America, was revealed to be an agent of Hydra. However, it wasn’t the original Cap we knew; instead, a version from Earth-61311 with a much more sinister mindset had taken his place as the Avenger. In the “Secret Empire” storyline, this alternate Steve collaborated with Hydra to seize control over S.H.I.E.L.D. and the U.S. government, earning the title of Hydra Supreme. He was ultimately defeated when the genuine Steve Rogers returned, thanks to the sentient Cosmic Cube named Kobik.

If Evans reappears as the Hydra Supreme, or any other antagonist for that matter, it seems plausible that he and Downey will join forces once more. This time, however, instead of allying with the Avengers, they might find themselves at odds with a team lacking some of its original members. Characters such as Spider-Man and the Winter Soldier may struggle against adversaries who bear familiar faces among the evildoers.

Evans’ future in the MCU has infinite possibilities

Absolutely, it’s not definitive that Chris Evans will portray a villain. Remember, he left “Fantastic Four” fans stunned in 2024 when he unexpectedly reappeared as Johnny Storm in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” So, while it’s conceivable that Evans might step back into the role of the Human Torch again – but if he does, it’s unlikely to be the same version who suffered a tragic end in the Void.

If Chris Evans reprises his role as Captain America in the future (and not a malicious version), it’s likely that he would appear as a different incarnation from various universes. He might become the Steve Rogers of the Ultimate universe (Earth-1610) or even the Cap merged with Doctor Strange to form Soldier Supreme, as depicted in the “Infinity Warps” storyline. The options are numerous, given that there’s still a possibility that Chris Evans isn’t playing any of these characters at all. Remember, nobody expected Robert Downey Jr. to play Doom, so it’s possible that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is planning another unexpected twist for fans. All we can be certain of is that whatever role Chris Evans takes on, we’ll be eagerly watching.
