As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of Batman and his rogues gallery over the years, I must say, the prospect of Barry Keoghan’s Joker getting an HBO spinoff is nothing short of intriguing. Having seen Cesar Romero and Cameron Monahan don the iconic purple suit on the small screen, I can’t help but wonder what Keoghan will bring to the table.
In the pipeline for the next “The Batman” spinoff could be a story centered around another infamous villain who had a brief role in the Matt Reeves-directed movie. Following the immense popularity of “The Penguin,” it appears that HBO is interested in broadening the dark superhero world with a fresh interpretation of a character well known to Batman’s nemesis. According to a recent speculation, there’s talk of Barry Keoghan, who played the Joker in “The Batman,” getting his own HBO spinoff series.
The World of Reel’s Marvelvision podcast indicates that there’s a potential new TV series based on “The Batman” focusing on the Joker character, portrayed by actor Joaquin Phoenix’s likeness (played by Keoghan in the film). This series could unfold after “The Batman: Part II,” positioning the Joker as the primary antagonist for the third movie in Reeves’ trilogy. It’s uncertain whether this rumored Joker project relates to an earlier planned Arkham TV spinoff, but if it does, Joker would significantly influence the franchise, with Keoghan appearing as the main adversary for Robert Pattinson’s Batman.
Indeed, this rumor needs to be approached cautiously. But if it’s true, it seems logical for HBO to move on to another significant DC villain after “The Penguin.” The recent Joker movie didn’t perform well at the box office, but its unique take could merit a TV series. Since the Joker is the wild card in the Reeves’ trilogy, a prequel series to flesh out the character before he becomes the main antagonist makes perfect sense, given that Colin Farrell’s Penguin appears to be following a similar path.
The Batman’s Joker Getting the TV Treatment (Again)
If Barry Keoghan’s portrayal of the Joker in the HBO/ Max series set within the Batman universe is indeed confirmed, it would be the third time we see the Clown Prince of Crime on television. The iconic role was first played by Cesar Romero in the 1960s Adam West’s Batman series. More recently, Cameron Monahan stepped into the role for Gotham, a crime drama focusing on Batman’s arch-nemeses that aired on Fox from 2014 to 2019. In an unofficial capacity, the Joker was portrayed as Marquis Jet (played by Nick Creegan) in the Arrowverse, an original character who took up the mantle and look after the villain’s demise. DC’s Titans briefly introduced a live-action Joker, but it’s best to avoid discussing that show.
Beyond the possibility of a Joker-centric series, The Batman is also branching out in various manners, as confirmed directly by Matt Reeves. He’s currently negotiating with HBO for The Penguin Season 2, which might follow The Batman: Part II in 2026. Other potential candidates for a spinoff include Clayface, Mister Freeze, and likely Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman. Intriguingly, the latter was last depicted departing for Blüdhaven, making a series centered around her the first to be situated outside of Gotham City.
