The much-anticipated sequel to Matt Reeves’ movie, “The Batman: Part II,” featuring Robert Pattinson reprising his role as Batman, has been met with numerous postponements, pushing its release date back another year to October 1, 2027. This delay has sparked numerous speculations about the film’s production status and potential cancellation. However, Peter Safran, co-president of DC Studios alongside James Gunn, is stepping in to clear up any doubts regarding “The Batman” and its role within the larger DC Universe.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I recently learned from an interview with The Nerds of Color that Matt Reeves’ original plan for his Batman franchise remains intact, despite any delays. Regarding the “Elseworlds” label, which encompasses DC Comics films outside the main timeline, it was confirmed that Reeves’ trilogy will unfold as a gritty crime saga. To put it simply, the only thing that deviates from the traditional Elseworlds format is Reeves’ unique take on the world itself.
He’s sharing his tale about crime, specifically from the perspective of characters like Batman and The Penguin, which seems to be the focus.
In the course of our discussion, the co-head of DC Studios provided additional insights about the Elsewords label. At present, only “The Batman” trilogy is set in an alternate universe; the remaining films from DC Studios align with the newly revamped DC Universe. Safran added:
Under the umbrella of DC Studios, our association with Matt remains strong and unchanged. However, beyond this, there’s not much more to share at the moment. The decision to include Clayface in the DC Universe was crucial as it marks the origin story for a timeless Batman adversary, a classic villain in the DC lore.
‘The Batman: Part II’ Begins Shooting This Year… Hopefully
As a die-hard DC fan, I can understand why some fellow enthusiasts have accepted the delay in The Batman: Part II. They’d rather wait a year for a masterpiece than settle for a hastily made one. However, I must admit that the slow development of the film has started to cause concern among us dedicated fans. Back in December, Matt Reeves mentioned that the script was nearing completion and would be finalized by early 2025. Yet, we’re still waiting for an official confirmation that the script is indeed done.
Regardless, Reeves remains determined that filming for the project will commence this year. As Robert Pattinson shared last month, “We haven’t started shooting it yet, but I think we’ll begin at the end of the year.” Plot details for The Batman: Part II have not been disclosed as of now, though it is confirmed that Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright (Commissioner Gordon), and Colin Farrell (Penguin) will reprise their roles in the sequel. The identity of the villain remains uncertain, with many speculating that The Joker might serve as the primary antagonist. However, a significant portion of fans also believe that the enigmatic Court of Owls could make an appearance in The Batman.
