As a longtime fan of Shannen Doherty‘s work, I have been deeply saddened by the news of her passing. Having grown up watching her on shows like “Charmed” and “Beverly Hills, 90210,” I hold a special place in my heart for her acting talents and the unique experiences she brought to each role.
On July 13, 2024, Shannen Doherty passed away at the age of 53, after a long fight against breast cancer which was diagnosed in 2015. The world mourns the loss of one of its gifted television stars who gained recognition with shows like “Our House” in the 80s, and later became a household name with hit series such as “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed.” Her contributions to cinema are equally noteworthy, making it essential to remember her work through this collection of Shannen Doherty’s movies and TV shows in her memory.
Little House On The Prairie (1974-1983)
A family’s perspective of life in the Midwestern farmers community during the 19th century in America.
As someone who grew up watching classic television shows, I can confidently say that “Little House on the Prairie” is one of Shannen Doherty’s most remarkable early accomplishments. I still remember the excitement I felt when she joined the cast as Jenny Wilder in the ninth and final season. Her performance added a fresh energy to the beloved period drama based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s autobiographical novels.
You can also watch “Little House on the Prairie” online via Amazon Prime, or consider streaming it on Peacock instead. Alternatively, purchase the DVD version for your personal collection on Amazon.
The Secret Of NIMH (1982)
A widowed mouse with a voiceover by Elizabeth Hartman sets out on a perilous quest, seeking help from a rat community and other creatures, to discover a remedy for her sickly son’s condition.
One reason why it’s excellent with Shannen Doherty in the cast: At just 11 years old, Shannen Doherty made her first appearance in a feature film, contributing her voice to the character of Teresa, the eldest child of Mrs. Brisby, in Don Bluth’s underappreciated animated movie from the ’80s titled The Secret of NIMH. This remarkable adventure film showcases Doherty’s early acting talent.
You can also watch “The Secret of NIMH” for free on Pluto TV, or purchase or rent it through Amazon.
Girls Just Want To Have Fun (1985)
As a gamer, I’d put myself in the shoes of the Catholic all-girls high school student. When my military family moved to Chicago, I felt torn from my familiar surroundings. But then, I met this rebellious classmate. She was unlike anyone I had ever encountered before. Her carefree spirit and daring attitude intrigued me. My strict father had always expected me to follow a certain path, but her encouragement made me question if there was more to life than what was laid out for me. Little by little, she inspired me to defy my father’s expectations and chase after my own passion – dancing.
As a gamer, I’d say: Why I love “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” with Shannen Doherty: This movie, named after a famous Cyndi Lauper tune, is an enjoyable coming-of-age romantic comedy. In it, a young Shannen Doherty, aged 14, plays Maggie Malene – the little sister of my character’s love interest, Jeff (Lee Montgomery). It’s filled with fun moments that really resonate with me.

Heathers (1988)
In a fresh interpretation, a sixteen-year-old girl portrayed by Winona Ryder discovers that belonging to her high school popular crowd isn’t as valuable as she once thought. She forms an alliance with an outcast boy, Christian Slater, and together they devise a plan to take retribution against those who once rejected and marginalized them.
As a huge fan, I can’t help but rave about one of Shannen Doherty’s most memorable roles: Heather Duke from “Heathers.” This classic high school movie is a must-watch, and Doherty’s portrayal of the clique’s supposedly weaker member is nothing short of brilliant. In an intriguing oral history with Entertainment Weekly, she was labeled as the “megabitch” who transforms from an insignificant member to a formidable force.

Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-2000)
In the ’90s hit drama series, a Minnesota clan makes a move to Beverly Hills, California, and faces the challenge of adjusting to the wealthy and fashionable social circle. Throughout its run, the show follows the journeys of twins Brenda and Brandon as they maneuver through high school and early adulthood alongside their tight-knit friends.
Shannen Doherty’s exceptional performance as the intelligent and witty Brenda Walsh in “Beverly Hills, 90210” during its initial four seasons significantly contributed to her status as a beloved TV figure of her time. She later reprised her role in the 2008 revival of the show called “90210.”
You can watch “Beverly Hills, 90210” streaming on Pluto TV.
Mallrats (1995)
As a dedicated comic book enthusiast who’s recently experienced heartbreak, I share this unfortunate experience with my trusted friend. After being jilted by our girlfriends, we decide to spend a day at our go-to escape: the local shopping mall. Little do we know, an intriguing series of events await us there.
Why it is one of the best Shannen Doherty movies: Doherty starred in one of the best Kevin Smith movies, Mallrats, as Rene Mosier, who dumps Lee’s Brodie for Ben Affleck’s Shannon Hamilton.

Charmed (1998-2006)
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: Discovering our family heritage, my sisters and I, played by Shannen Doherty, Alyssa Milano, and Holly Marie Combs, unravel a shocking secret – we’re descendants of a long lineage of witches! With this newfound knowledge comes great responsibility. Together, we must harness our unique powers to confront and vanquish the sinister forces that threaten to disrupt our world.
Why it is one of the best Shannen Doherty TV shows: For the first three seasons of Charmed — a hit supernatural drama from creator Constance M. Burge and Beverly Hills, 90210 producer Aaron Spelling — Doherty starred as Prue Halliwell, until on-set circumstances (per Variety) led to her exit and the character’s death.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
When they find out that their comic book “Bluntman and Chronic” is being turned into a movie without their approval, a talkative pothead (portrayed by Jason Mewes) and his mostly silent companion (represented by Kevin Smith) decide to derail the filming.
In “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back,” Shannen Doherty appears, not reprising her role as Rene, but instead playing herself while working under Wes Craven’s direction on the set of a phony “Scream” film production.

Scare Tactics (2003-2013)
Innocent individuals become the leading actors in their own frightening films due to intricately planned and heart-pounding practical jokes.
Reason why “Scare Tactics” stands out among Shannen Doherty’s TV shows: For over a year and a half, Shannen Doherty led the cast of the popular hidden camera show “Scare Tactics.” However, her tenure ended when she was replaced first by Stephen Baldwin, and later by Tracy Morgan.

Burning Palms (2010)
In this film, set in Los Angeles, are some unusual stories. One follows a woman troubled by her fiancé’s strong bond with his daughter. Another story introduces a gay couple who start to have second thoughts about their decision to adopt a 7-year-old boy from Africa. Additionally, there are other intriguing narratives presented.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: I’ve been hooked on Shannen Doherty’s acting since her days on “Little House on the Prairie” with Michael Landon. In “Burning Palms,” she shines as Dr. Shelly, a therapist in a darkly comic anthology film. Chris Landon, whose dad worked with Doherty before, directs this intriguing project.
You can watch “Burning Palms” for free on Amazon’s streaming platform, Freevee. Alternatively, you can also stream it for free on Tubi. If you prefer to own a physical copy, consider purchasing the Blu-ray version of “Burning Palms” on Amazon.
Doherty has left an impressive and diverse body of work both on television and in films, which will be deeply missed.
