The journey of “The Big Bang Theory” began much like the cosmic expansion following the initial explosion, or the big bang. This popular sitcom, initially aired in 2007 and concluded in 2019 after 12 seasons, has continued to expand its fan base just as the real big bang expands across the universe. The series revolved around four scientists, Leonard, Sheldon, Raj, and Howard, along with their neighbor Penny, who were as eccentric as their scientific and comic book-themed escapades.
Based on a recent report by Nielsen, as reported by Deadline, it appears that The Big Bang Theory remains popular and was the most-watched series in terms of binge-viewing on streaming platforms in the year 2024. The data analyzed the viewing statistics for The Big Bang Theory on the Max streaming service. Although it wasn’t the most-watched show overall, it held the title of being the most “binged.” On average, each Max subscriber watched approximately 265.5 episodes, given that the series consists of a total of 281 episodes. This number was calculated by dividing the average individual viewing time by the average length of an episode. Six years after its final episode, the sitcom attracted viewership numbers that most shows can only aspire to. In 2024 alone, The Big Bang Theory was watched for a staggering total of 29.1 billion minutes, which equates to 38.5 million hours.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m always eager to share my thoughts on what I watch. In the latest Nielsen report, it turns out that the hilarious Seth McFarlane creation, “American Dad!”, took second place. Now, if you’re among Hulu’s subscribers like me, you might be surprised to know that on average, we each stream around 175.3 episodes of this series! It’s fascinating to note the report’s observation about our viewing habits. Despite half-hour programs typically being more binge-worthy, the sheer commitment viewers demonstrate in consuming content across various genres is simply astounding.
What Was the Most Viewed Streaming Show in 2024?
Last year’s Nielsen report provided an annual summary of the TV and streaming preferences for 2024. The report highlighted the top three streaming choices from the previous year, which might (or might not, depending on your age or whether you have children) catch you off guard. Among the favorites were the iconic children’s cartoon “Bluey,” Netflix’s period/romance drama “Bridgerton,” and Disney’s cherished animated film “Moana.” These three titles emerged as the most watched streaming options last year.
Last year, it turned out that I couldn’t get enough of Prime Video’s blockbuster adaptation of the video game, “Fallout,” which snatched up the unofficial title for the most streamed new original drama. On the comedy side, Netflix’s “Nobody Wants This” was the clear favorite among new releases. Interestingly, the report examined more than just recent shows. Besides binge-watching “The Big Bang Theory” or exploring the post-apocalyptic world in “Fallout,” I also found myself revisiting some old favorites, referred to as “legacy” titles in the report. Surprisingly, the 1974 TV adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book series, “The Little House on the Prairie,” shared the title for the most-streamed “legacy” series last year with the classic TV western, “Gunsmoke,” featuring James Arness and Dennis Weaver.
By the year 2025, it’s challenging to forecast which television show will claim the title of most popular. HBO might maintain a strong lead with Season 3 of “The White Lotus,” Season 2 of “The Last of Us,” and the upcoming “Game of Thrones” spin-off, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” Simultaneously, Daredevil will make his solo debut in the MCU through the series, “Daredevil: Born Again.” However, it’s also possible that an unannounced original series could capture the highest viewership of 2025.
