The Big Trouble In Little China Sequel Most Fans Never Heard Of

As a long-time fan of John Carpenter’s films, I’ve grown up with his unique brand of storytelling and suspense. The 1986 cult classic “Big Trouble in Little China” holds a special place in my heart, and the news that it was getting a sequel, no matter the form, had me ecstatic.

During the late 1970s and through the 1980s, Director John Carpenter experienced an impressive run in his film career. Notable movies from this period include “Halloween,” “Escape from New York,” and “The Thing.” In 1986, he released “Big Trouble in Little China,” featuring frequent collaborator Kurt Russell as Jack Burton, a truck driver transformed into an action hero. Although critically acclaimed, the film faced significant financial challenges. As a result, despite its current popularity, it did not receive a sequel—or so most fans believe.

In a turn of events, “Big Trouble in Little China” got a sequel titled “Big Trouble in Little China: Old Man Jack.” This comic series, released in 2020, follows the storyline of the 1986 classic by John Carpenter and Anthony Burch, with artwork by Jorge Corona. In this continuation, an aging Burton finds himself joining forces with his longtime enemy, David Lo Pan (previously played by James Hong in the film). As the apocalypse ravages their world, Burton remains cautious of Lo Pan’s hidden motives.

As a devoted fan, I can tell you that even if a follow-up comic has been released, it doesn’t necessarily mean that a “Big Trouble in Little China” movie sequel isn’t being planned. In fact, there were whispers of such a project a few years back.

A big screen Big Trouble in Little China sequel is supposedly happening

In essence, “Big Trouble in Little China: Old Man Jack” is just as outrageous and filled with action as the original movie. Reading this comic brings back the beloved characters of Jack Burton, David Lo Pan, and others. Prior to its release, there were reports of a new Big Trouble in Little China film in production. However, the upcoming movie is expected to be quite different from both the 1986 classic and Old Man Jack comic series.

In 2015, it was first announced that the new “Big Trouble in Little China” film, which was to star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the main character replacing Burton, was set to be released. However, in 2018, it was disclosed that this wasn’t actually a remake of the original film, but rather a continuation of the story without Burton and Kurt Russell at the forefront. It is also apparent that John Carpenter, the creator of the classic, won’t be contributing creatively to the project. As CinemaBlend reported in 2022, “They want a film featuring Dwayne Johnson, so they went with that title. They don’t care about me or my movie.”

Currently, Johnson’s “Big Trouble in Little China” continuation hasn’t received any major developments since its initial announcement, leaving fans speculating if the project will eventually be released. In case it doesn’t, readers can still enjoy the storyline further by checking out “Big Trouble in Little China: Old Man Jack.”
