The director behind the 2021 horror flick “The Black Phone,” Scott Derrickson, is now in the post-production phase for the sequel, set to hit theaters on October 17, 2025. At this time, details about the movie are scarce, but Derrickson has recently revealed some plot points that clear up one major mystery regarding “The Black Phone 2“: The specific timeline in which the horror tale is set.
In a recent conversation with Screen Rant, director Scott Derrickson acknowledges that it’s impossible to ignore the fact that time has elapsed since the first movie and the young cast members have grown. The plot of “The Black Phone” revolves around 13-year-old Finney Blake who gets kidnapped by a serial killer known as the Grabber, who has a peculiar fondness for masks. Given that “The Black Phone 2” is delving into similar characters, dealing with the age difference might have been tricky, but Derrickson has a strategy in place…
Definitely some unexpected twists! I’ve recently completed filming for The Black Phone 2, and let me assure you, there was no sense of obligation to create a sequel. Making a sequel wasn’t an inevitability.
However, upon reflection, I found that if I were to create another film following Black Phone, titled The Gorge, by the time I began production on the next project, all those children would have moved on to high school. Essentially, this new movie would be a high school coming-of-age story much like the initial film was a middle school coming-of-age tale.
What Do We Know About ‘The Black Phone 2’?
In a nutshell, Mason Thames portrayed Finney in “The Black Phone.” The young actor, who is 17 years old, is set to reappear in the sequel. This upcoming film will also welcome back Ethan Hawke as the Grabber, Madeleine McGraw as Gwen (Finney’s sister), and Jeremy Davies as the children’s father. Demián Bichir, known for roles in “The Nun” and “Godzilla vs Kong,” has been added to the cast. Mike Derrickson is directing a script he co-wrote with C. Robert Cargill. Jason Blum will produce through his studio, Blumhouse Productions.
One intriguing enigma regarding “The Black Phone 2” lies in understanding its plot, as the original film, based on Joe Hill’s short story from his anthology “20th Century Ghosts“, has already been adapted. The first movie concludes with Finney killing the Grabber, and his body remaining in the basement where numerous children were murdered. With this resolution, it appears that the storyline has been exhausted. However, “The Black Phone 2” seems to be in development despite its lack of a literary source for inspiration. Interestingly, it was Joe Hill who proposed some concepts to director Derrickson, leading to the decision to create a sequel. This decision might have also been influenced by the commercial success of the first film, which earned over $161 million at the box office.
1. Finney could confront his old tormentors, the bullies who brutally attacked him in the first movie.
2. Alternatively, the sequel might delve deeper into the character of Gwen, Finney’s intelligent sister, whose unique skills were instrumental in locating her brother during the original story.
Given the supernatural elements of the first film, it’s also plausible that The Grabber could reappear, potentially taking on a more frightening form. We’ll have to wait until October 17, 2025, when The Black Phone 2 hits theaters, to find out for sure.
