As a die-hard fan of The Blair Witch Project, I can’t contain my excitement for this 25th anniversary re-release! After all these years, we finally get to witness the masterpiece as it was originally intended – and with improved technology to boot!
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that “The Blair Witch Project” is set for a special 25th anniversary re-release! This means that finally, we can experience this iconic horror masterpiece as the directors, Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, originally intended.
Michael Monello, the producer, announced that the home video release of the movie will be “more terrifying” due to a technological adjustment being implemented this time. He explained via X, “The Blair Witch Project was initially shot on Hi8 video and black-and-white 16mm film, edited on a Media 100XR, a popular non-linear editing system back then. Since theaters at that time did not have video projectors, we had to convert our DigiBeta master to 35mm using a process called ‘telecine,’ which essentially involved recording the video onto a special screen in a controlled setting with a 35mm film camera.
Artisan Video Distributors inadvertently made a significant blunder when they opted to use the 35mm telecine transfer for their home video release instead of the original DigiBeta master. This choice resulted in substantial motion distortions, giving the Hi8 footage a grainy appearance and muting all colors with a brownish haze, which obscured details. Instead of sharp cuts, the edits during this transfer were three-frame dissolves.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of “The Blair Witch Project”, they joined forces with Second Sight to rework the movie from its original Hi8 tapes and 16mm film, fixing any issues to present the film in its most authentic form. The Region B version will also offer around 90 minutes of previously unseen deleted scenes and a two-and-a-half-hour documentary. In Monello’s words, “The new master is more terrifying, crisper, and exactly as we envisioned it should be.” I hope fans appreciate this updated transfer—its improved visuals, fluid motion, and intense cuts create a much scarier psychological impact compared to all previous versions.

25 years after its conception, our small production, ‘The Blair Witch Project’, will finally see the light of day, just as we originally planned. For those intrigued by this tale, here are some details.
