The Boys Showrunner on That Butcher Moment Which Changed the Last Episode

As a huge fan of “The Boys” and Karl Urban’s portrayal of Billy Butcher, I can’t help but be in awe of the depth and emotion that Urban brought to the table in Season 4. The way Eric Kripke, the showrunner, spoke about Urban’s Emmy-worthy performance in one particular scene during the finale left me with goosebumps.

Eric Kripke, the mastermind behind Prime Video’s hit superhero series “The Boys,” acknowledges Karl Urban’s Emmy-worthy acting in his role as Billy Butcher during Season 4’s finale. While preparing to film a pivotal scene, Kripke initially planned to intercut between Butcher and Hughie (Jack Quaid). However, once shooting began, Kripke was struck by the intensity of Urban’s portrayal. Consequently, he decided to keep the camera solely on Urban to fully capture his powerful performance.

In the fourth season of “The Boys,” Butcher deals with the repercussions of consuming large quantities of Temp V serum during the previous season. After being diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor caused by his transformation into a superhero, Butcher’s days are numbered. Despite his usual wit, cursing, and combat skills in the new season, Butcher’s struggle against the toxic substance taking over his body becomes more prominent.

Butcher is dealing with an advanced tumor that causes him to vividly imagine his deceased wife, Becca, and FBI agent Joe Kessler, portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. These two phantasms exert opposing influences on Butcher. Urban’s exceptional acting performance during the episode was praised by Kripke in a tweet.

I was lying in the hospital bed, recovering from the vicious attack that left me unconscious in the last episode. In a scene that stood out to me, Hughie came to visit and we talked about Butcher’s determination to keep fighting against his illness instead of abandoning The Boys and their mission. When he asked for my assistance, I shared a memory from our childhood:

When I was young, I learned about a unique steakhouse in Nevada. There, birds display their breasts when serving you a rib-eye. Lenny found this hilarious and nearly wet himself upon hearing it. We planned to visit someday. However, humor has a peculiar way of surfacing during significant moments, doesn’t it?

Kripke expressed his high regard for Urban’s acting in that particular scene through a post on his X account, labeling it as “outstanding, Emmy-worthy work.” To illustrate his point, he attached a few images from the hospital scene in “Butcher,” and disclosed how Urban’s performance influenced him to alter his initial concept for the sequence.

How Season 4 Set Up the Finale of The Boys

In the Season 4 finale, originally named “Assassination Run,” but later changed to “Season Four Finale” following Donald Trump’s assassination attempt attempt, didn’t result in a positive outcome. Butcher managed to sort out his personal matters and rejoined the team only to find Victoria Neuman negotiating with The Boys. True to form, Butcher disregarded Hughie’s warnings against hasty actions and eliminated Neuman using his Supers abilities. With Butcher holding the Supe-killing virus and Homelander edging closer to securing the White House, The Boys made plans to escape the country.

As a gamer, I can tell you this: We didn’t make it very far in our mission against Vought. One by one, we were taken down by their elite soldiers. It wasn’t easy, but just when all hope seemed lost, Starlight miraculously reclaimed her powers and managed to escape. The rest of us, however, are now in a tight spot. With only one season left of “The Boys,” the tension has never been greater. But unfortunately, we fans have to wait another two years to find out how it all ends.
