At the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, director Brady Corbet, renowned for his Brutalist style, advocated for increased creative freedom among filmmakers as he graciously accepted the honor for Best Drama Movie.
Corbet, who had already been awarded for best film director during the ceremony on Sunday, expressed deep emotion, saying, ‘I am truly touched.’ Later, he jokingly admitted, ‘I only prepared a single speech.’
In the end, Corbet had a lot more to ponder than one might expect. He shared with the audience, “I’d like to give everyone something to mull over: The final tiebreak in Final-cut goes to the director.” He added that this wasn’t a contentious point but should be obvious. In fact, he had been informed that the film was deemed undistributable, that no one would watch it, and that it wouldn’t succeed.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “You know, I’m not bitter about this, but I see this moment as a chance to shine a light on the amazing creators behind the screen – not just my fellow nominees, but all the talented directors in this very room. After all, films are their creations. So, let’s rally together and celebrate them. Let’s give them the recognition they deserve.
He added, “People didn’t necessarily anticipate a nearly four-hour movie centered around a mid-20th-century designer in 70mm format. Yet, it holds together. I implore you all to give it some thought.
Additionally, nominees in that category included “Conclave”, “A Complete Unknown”, “Dune: Part Two”, “The Nickel Boys”, and “September 5”. The award was presented by Glenn Close.
The movie titled “The Brutalist” secured seven nominations for Golden Globes prior to this coming Sunday’s event. It managed to win three awards, with Adrien Brody being honored as the best actor in a drama film. Additionally, Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce received nominations for their performances in the movie that revolves around an architect escaping Europe post World War II.
During his acceptance speech for the award earlier in the evening, Corbet expressed his gratitude for the spotlight. “I’d like to sincerely thank the Golden Globes for providing our film with more visibility through this recognition,” Corbet stated. “It is incredibly significant for a movie like this, which, just a few short months ago, was facing quite unfavorable odds.
On Sunday, Nikki Glaser was the host of the 2025 Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. You can catch the event live on CBS and Paramount+ with Showtime.
The Golden Globe Awards’ producer, Dick Clark Productions, is co-owned by Penske Media Eldridge – a partnership between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge – who also own The Hollywood Reporter.
