As a die-hard fan who has grown up watching Joe Dante’s magical cinematic universe unfold, I find myself both intrigued and amused by his reaction to the remake of “The ‘Burbs”. With over three decades of filmmaking experience under his belt, it’s not surprising that he raises an eyebrow at the prospect of stretching a one-off story into a full TV series.
Joe Dante is a bit surprised that his movie The ‘Burbs is getting the series-remake treatment.
Hey there, gaming community! I just got a chance to sit down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about the upcoming season of Gremlins: The Wild Batch animated series. You might remember me from directing the original Gremlins movie back in 1984 and its sequel in ’90. These days, I’m still involved with the world of these little critters as a consulting producer for this prequel show that’s set to return soon. Can’t wait for you all to see it!
The director was behind the 1989 dark comedy “The ‘Burbs”, featuring Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, and Carrie Fisher. This film centered around a family man who suspects his new neighbors are concealing a mysterious secret. Recently, there has been renewed interest in this movie as Keke Palmer is set to star in a series adaptation for Peacock, with Brian Grazer and Seth MacFarlane serving as executive producers.
At the time of the series announcement, Dante decided to hop onto X (previously known as Twitter), and he replied with “Perhaps I’ll join?” in response to a post regarding the news.
When asked about his thoughts on the remake, Dante chuckles and shares with THR, “Initially, my response was more like, ‘How are they going to turn that story into a whole TV series?’ Rather than, ‘I’d love to be the one to create it.’
He continues, “Good luck to them. It’s kind a one-off story.”
Dante clarifies that he hasn’t received any communication regarding his participation in the show’s team. Regarding his thoughts on his old movie inspiring a fresh endeavor, Dante expresses, “It’s always pleasant when something can last.
During our chat about “Gremlins: The Wild Bunch”, Dante also touched upon the prospect of a third “Gremlins” movie. He mentioned, regarding its potential, “That’s ultimately in the hands of the audience.” Essentially, he implied that due to the size and popularity of the franchise, it’s likely someone will create something new.
The filmmaker explained, “However, it’s been challenging for people to figure out the specifics, ‘How will we proceed with this?’ This upcoming series solves that dilemma perfectly as it is a prequel, animated, and serves as an ideal continuation of the Gremlins storyline.
