Dr. Stanley Goodspeed, Nicolas Cage
In the movie “The Rock,” Nicolas Cage portrays Dr. Stanley Goodspeed, an FBI biochemist who’s meant to be a scientific advisor, not a fighter, during the Alcatraz infiltration operation. However, when the military team accompanying him is annihilated, he unwillingly steps into the role of an action hero. Fresh from his Academy Award for Best Actor win for “Leaving Las Vegas” (1995), Cage embarked on a streak of popular late-’90s action films with “The Rock,” followed by “Con Air” and “Face/Off.
Anyone who’s followed the actor’s career closely is well aware that it’s been quite a turbulent journey for Nic Cage since then. His best and worst films have both gained legendary status, though there are few who would argue with his acting talent. However, he’s also earned a reputation for some rather unusual movie choices. Despite the occasional flop that has led to some jokes about him, recent years have seen Nic Cage consistently deliver in critically-acclaimed productions like “Mandy,” “Dream Scenario,” “Pig,” and “Longlegs.” Yet, regardless of whether a Nic Cage film is well-received or not, his ability to bring a character to life remains impressive, and even his most outlandish roles are consistently engaging.
John Patrick Mason, Sean Connery
In “The Rock,” Dr. Goodspeed works alongside John Patrick Mason, a seasoned MI6 agent who spent three decades in prison for stealing sensitive government data. His past escape from Alcatraz is why he’s involved in the mission, eventually guiding Goodspeed after their team is the last one standing following an infiltration. The character of Mason was brilliantly portrayed by Sean Connery, who imbued the role with his signature charisma. At the time of filming “The Rock,” Connery was 65 years old. He stopped acting on-screen in 2003 and voiced a character for the last time in 2012. Unfortunately, Connery passed away on October 31, 2020, at the age of 90.
A popular fan theory on the internet speculates that “The Rock” is actually a sequel to the James Bond series, with Mason being secretly 007 in disguise. Sean Connery, who played the iconic role of James Bond, portrayed his character in “The Rock” as an aged and bitter version of his classic spy persona. Brigadier General Francis X. Hummel is a tough-as-nails military leader who seizes control of Alcatraz as a desperate move to pressure the government into providing financial aid for the families of the Marines who lost their lives while serving under his command. Despite his stern demeanor, he displays some admirable traits compared to certain other individuals in his ranks.
Ed Harris, the actor who breathed life into General Hummel, is a formidable talent with an abundance of weight and presence. Known for his roles in “Apollo 13” and “The Abyss,” among others, he had already earned his first Academy Award nomination before “The Rock.” This made him a fitting selection to play against the tandem of Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage. With a career spanning big-budget action films as well as thoughtful art house dramas, Harris has appeared in numerous iconic movie roles. Given these qualities, Michael Biehn is an ideal casting choice for this character.
Michael Biehn came aboard the film’s ensemble, boasting an impressive portfolio of iconic military roles. He portrayed Kyle Reese in the 1984 “Terminator,” Corporal Hicks in the 1986 “Aliens,” and Lieutenant Curran in the 1990 “Navy Seals.” His confrontation with Ed Harris was seen in 1989’s “The Abyss.” Having Biehn play Anderson and subsequently writing off his character underscores the intense tension in “The Rock.
As great as Biehn’s run in the 1980s and 1990s was, “The Rock” is arguably his last truly iconic film. Nevertheless, he’s continued to work steadily since then in smaller movies as well as TV shows like the CBS Western series “The Magnificent Seven” and the syndicated Canadian show “Adventure Inc.” He’s also played Sheriff Hague in Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse: Planet Terror” and made guest appearances in shows like “The Mandalorian” and “The Walking Dead.”
