Showtime has commissioned another season, the eighth, for their drama series “The Chi,” making it a select few among their shows to reach this milestone.
The revival occurs following the record-breaking streaming premiere of season seven, which garnered 2 million views on Paramount+ and Showtime within a week after its May 16 release. With this renewal, The Chi will now share the title for the second longest-running scripted series on Showtime’s history alongside shows like Dexter, Homeland, and Weeds. Notably, Shameless (which aired for 11 seasons) holds the top spot in this category.
In a statement, Chris McCarthy, co-CEO and president of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, commended the strong debut of season seven of “The Chi,” stating that it broke viewership records and marked the most-watched season premiere in the show’s history. Lena Waithe, the creator, elevated the creative aspect even further with her unconventional storytelling, which penetrates through typical tropes to offer a raw and truthful portrayal of life on the South Side of Chicago, exposing its depth, power, and complexity.
For season seven, the main theme is “Alicia (Lynn Whitfield) taking charge as the central figure, empowers the crucial females of ‘The Chi’. However, as allegiances are strained and fresh conflicts ignite, it’s evident that there can only be one throne, and claiming it will come at a great sacrifice.
Waithe developed “The Chi” and serves as executive producer through her Hillman Grad production company. Joining her in this role are co-showrunners Justin Hillian from Hillianaire Productions and Jewel Coronel from Uncut Gems, Inc., along with Common, Aaron Kaplan, Rick Famuyiwa, Resheida Brady-Anderson, Derek Dudley, and Shelby Stone of ID8 Multimedia, and Naomi Funabashi and Rishi Rajani from Hillman Grad. This season, Deondray Gossfield and Quincy LeNear Gossfield each directed multiple episodes as supervising producers. Disney’s 20th Television is the studio responsible for production.
