The Coen Brothers are known for creating some of the finest deadpan comedy thrillers ever made, and one of their masterpieces can now be watched for free. Starting their directorial journey in 1984 with Blood Simple, featuring John Getz and Frances McDormand, they went on to produce a series of remarkable films like Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, and The Hudsucker Proxy. However, it was in 1996 when they unveiled what many consider their magnum opus – Fargo.
Enthusiasts of the Coen Brothers’ works, along with those yet to discover them, now have the opportunity to watch Fargo free of charge on Tubi. Just like many of their films, Joel and Ethan Coen were the writers and directors of this production, gathering an impressive ensemble for the film. The movie brought McDormand (also Joel’s wife) back to collaborate with them once more, while also featuring William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, and Peter Stormare in standout roles.
In 1997, Fargo garnered several Oscar nominations, marking the first win for the Coen Brothers. The movie was nominated in categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Actress (for McDormand), and Best Supporting Actor (Macy). Notably, the Coen Brothers won the Academy Award for their exceptional screenplay, which was known as “Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen” at that time. Additionally, McDormand secured the award for Best Actress in the same year.
The official plot synopsis reads:
Jerry Lundegaard, played by William H. Macy, is a car dealer based in Minneapolis who finds himself drowning in debt and in dire need of cash. In an attempt to solve his financial problems, he employs two rough individuals – Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare – to stage the kidnapping of his own wife.
In a notable contribution to the Coens’ distinctive storytelling approach, Fargo served as a catalyst. This style often provokes viewers to ponder, “how would I react in this scenario?” Although it may not appear extraordinary compared to the current trend of films earning over a billion dollars annually, Fargo was commercially successful. The movie earned $60 million, outperforming an expected budget of merely $7 million, all thanks to robust word-of-mouth. Released in 1996, a year celebrated as the ‘era of art house films,’ Fargo competed with independent movies that were receiving significant awards and recognition, such as The English Patient.
The movie currently stands at number 175 on IMDb’s list of all-time greatest films, surpassing Warrior with Tom Hardy in the lead role, and is followed closely by Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.
Will ‘Fargo’ be Renewed for Season 6?
18 years following the theater release of Fargo, home viewers tuned in to watch a fresh TV series adaptation from FX, based on the acclaimed film by the Coen brothers. This show, titled “FX’s Fargo,” was an anthology series that unfolded seasonally, with each installment focusing on a distinct murder mystery and boasting an exceptional cast. The initial season featured Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Colin Hanks, and Allison Tolman. Since its debut, the show’s ensemble has grown to include big-name stars like Bob Odenkirk, Chris Rock, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jon Hamm, Kirsten Dunst, Ewan McGregor, Jessie Plemons, Kieran Culkin, and numerous others.
In 2024, Season 5 of the acclaimed series Fargo was unveiled and astonishingly garnered 15 Primetime Emmy nominations. Among these recognitions, Lamorne Morris clinched an award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Although there hasn’t been an official announcement about Season 6, fans are left speculating as it seems the show may have reached its conclusion. However, the show’s mastermind, Noah Hawley, remains hopeful that another season might still be on the cards. He expressed:
As a movie enthusiast, I’m absolutely convinced that we could benefit from another cinematic discussion. The enthusiasm and appreciation for it are clearly evident, and it seems our collective hunger for engaging film discourse remains undiminished.
