As a seasoned movie buff with decades of watching horror films under my belt, I can confidently say that the announcement of James Wan’s The Conjuring TV series is both exhilarating and bittersweet. The Conjuring franchise has been a staple in the supernatural genre for over a decade now, and the final chapter, The Conjuring: Last Rites, marks the end of an era.

Approximately a dozen years ago, horror enthusiasts were first introduced to the supernatural journey of James Wan’s film, The Conjuring. Since then, this introduction has blossomed into a collection of eight films, with three focusing on the ghost-hunting duo, Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Regrettably, every epic tale must conclude, and in 2025 The Conjuring: Last Rites will mark the end of the main franchise’s storyline. Recently, Wan himself has acknowledged this milestone on social media as “the end of an era.

Initially unveiled in April 2023 as an exclusive project for Max, details about this upcoming television series, which James Wan and Peter Safran (co-chairperson and co-CEO of DC Studios alongside James Gunn) are producing, have been scarce. Therefore, updates have been limited, other than the fact that it will take place after the main franchise’s events, meaning it’s still some time away as The Conjuring: Last Rites doesn’t premiere in cinemas until September 5, 2025.

It’s clear that the Green Lantern series is still under development, as confirmed by Casey Bloys, head of HBO and Max content, who mentioned it back in June along with other projects like The Conjuring and Crazy Rich Asians. Since then, the Green Lantern project has shown the most progress, with Kyle Chandler cast as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.

As a film enthusiast, it’s reassuring to learn that “The Conjuring” is still progressing, yet I eagerly await any casting announcements in the future. James Wan seems to have an overflowing plate with not only wrapping up the concluding chapter of the main series, but also working on M3GAN 2.0, Mortal Kombat 2, a humorous alien sitcom reminiscent of The Office, a revamp of The Munsters, and potentially a fresh take on The Creature from the Black Lagoon. Fingers crossed for more updates on the “The Conjuring” TV series in the upcoming months.
