The Conjuring Finds a New Streaming Home

In February 2022, James Wan’s critically acclaimed horror film from 2013, The Conjuring, will reappear on streaming platforms. From then on, enthusiasts of spine-chilling movies can watch it in the Max library and embark on the beginning of a thriving horror franchise that continues to captivate audiences today.

On Max, you’ll find a variety of titles such as “We Live in Time”, “Malcolm X”, “Deepwater Horizon”, “Speed”, and “The Notebook”, to name a few. For those who enjoy horror, the Max library has offerings like the “Final Destination” series, Bong Joon-ho’s movie “The Host”, and the 1932 version of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”.

The initial “Conjuring” movie portrays the Perron family relocating to a farmhouse in Rhode Island. As they settle in, Roger, Carolyn, along with their five daughters, begin encountering unusual occurrences and poltergeist disturbances within their new abode. Eventually, they opt to contact the renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren for help. These individuals will endeavor to communicate with the spirits and expel them from the Perron family residence.

In the horror series produced by Warner Bros., the characters played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, known as the Warrens, are the main duo appearing in many of the films. Alongside them are actors such as Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston, Joey King, Mackenzie Foy, and others. This film has received a positive response with an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and 83% on the Popcornmeter (which is the audience score). Notable titles in the Conjuring universe that also boast impressive Rotten Tomatoes scores include The Conjuring 2, which has a 80%, and Annabelle: Creation with a 70%.

Debuting during the summer season of 2013, “The Conjuring” garnered immense popularity both among viewers and critics alike. The movie raked in nearly $320 million at the box office on a production budget of just $20 million, leaving Warner Bros. with no doubt that they had a promising horror series on their hands. This assumption stemmed from the film’s suggestion that the Warrens had many more chilling tales to tell beyond the ones showcased in this movie.

In the beginning, The Conjuring set things in motion. Yet, even before its release, Wan had subtly hinted at one of the most lucrative characters for the series. This character is none other than Annabelle, who makes her appearance in the opening scene of the film, sending shivers down the spine of every viewer as they watched a seemingly lifeless doll.

Annabelle went on to star in three movies of her own, while another character introduced in The Conjuring 2, Valak (the demonic nun), followed closely with two films. The Crooked Man, who was also presented in The Conjuring 2, is still eagerly awaiting his chance to take center stage in a standalone film.

The next sequel, titled The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is scheduled for release in September 2025, doesn’t have any confirmed details about its plot at this moment.

The Beginning of the Most Successful Horror Franchise of All Time

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, it’s hard to dispute the commercial success of the films in the Conjuring universe. Each movie raked in over $200 million at the box office, with The Nun (2018) leading as the most profitable, earning the title of highest-grossing film in the franchise. However, when weighed against The Conjuring itself, The Nun has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 24%.
