The Crown Producer Teases Spin-off Potential

As a cinephile who’s been captivated by the royal family’s on-screen dramas since I was but a wee lad watching “Princess Diaries” and “The Queen”, I must say that The Crown has truly redefined the genre for me. The authenticity, the attention to detail, and the stellar cast have made it a must-watch for any royal-obsessed film enthusiast like myself.

The critically acclaimed Netflix series, boldly named “The Crown“, concluded its sixth and last season a year ago, sparking whispers of possible continuations or offshoots. Recently, producer Andy Harries has hinted at the prospect of additional stories about the royals, labeling the potential opportunities as “infinite”.

The hit series The Crown has not only garnered massive viewership on Netflix but also amassed numerous awards. Following its conclusion, speculations have swirled about a possible continuation with a different Royal as the central figure. As reported by Deadline, Harries, the executive producer and founder of Left Bank Pictures who brought the show to life, discussed potential opportunities for future royal content. He further mentioned that it was advantageous that their agreement with Netflix was established early in the streaming service’s timeline, as this provides them with the flexibility to develop more from The Crown.

“The topic is clearly vast and open-ended. We can revisit it or continue exploring it. Over the course of six seasons, spanning six decades, we’ve covered a lot, but there’s still much more to be discovered. I have a feeling that at some point in the future, we might pick it up again.”

Discussions about the future of The Crown have been lively among both fans and creators. In 2022, it was disclosed that Netflix was discussing a possible prequel with Harries’ Left Bank Pictures. Additionally, creator Peter Morgan has hinted at having a concept for a prequel. One possibility could revolve around Edward VII, who ruled from 1901 to 1910 for a decade.

“The Crown”

While historical dramas have been around for some time, “The Crown” stands out due to its accurate representation and portrayal of British history, particularly with its exceptional casting choices. Unlike many productions that use de-aging techniques or makeup, “The Crown” switches actors according to each character’s age progression. For instance, Claire Foy was the Queen in seasons one and two, followed by Olivia Colman in seasons three and four, and Imelda Staunton takes over in the final two seasons. Even though the finale aired last year, casting director Robert Sterne has shared that he continues to receive interest from actresses hoping to portray Meghan Markle in future seasons.

Made by Morgan, his past significant works encompass the films “Frost/Nixon” (2008) and “The Queen” (2006). Notably, “The Crown” has garnered numerous awards, including Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for directing, casting, individual acting performances, and more. To date, the show has received 87 Emmy nominations, with 21 wins and 7 more nominations pending at the September award ceremony. Among the nominations are those for Outstanding Drama Series, as well as lead and supporting actor and actress nominations for West, Staunton, Debicki, Manville, and Pryce’s performances respectively. Additionally, Morgan is nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.
