At thirty years old, the miniature donkey who served as the inspiration for Eddie Murphy’s beloved character has tragically passed away. With anticipation building for the return of Donkey, Shrek, Fiona, and their friends in the animated movie series, it has been disclosed that the main attraction of Bol Park in Palo Alto, California, has departed from this world.
Known as Perry, the donkey has been a crowd favorite since the release of Shrek in 2001. However, after battling the excruciating hoof disease laminitis and a leg disorder that made it hard for him to stand, he was humanely put to sleep on Thursday to alleviate his suffering. Despite living a contented life away from the spotlight of Hollywood, Perry’s influence on cinema will continue to be evident in the Shrek series. But what led an ordinary donkey to become one of the most memorable characters of the past two decades?
As a fervent enthusiast, I’d like to share an intriguing tidbit about one of the talented artists behind the beloved character Shrek. According to Jenny Kiratii, who shared this fascinating detail with Palo Alto Online, it turns out that this animator resided close to Bol Park during the time they were working on the movie. Inspired by his wife, he often visited Perry’s enclosure at the park, seeking to infuse life into the design that would eventually be brought to voice by in various movies and shorts.
Following this, a team of animators responsible for Donkey’s character joined the enclosure and spent numerous hours drawing and refining their work around Perry. During this period, it is said that Perry received $74 as payment – a significant amount for any donkey at that time. It’s worth noting that the Shrek series has since become incredibly successful, amassing billions and garnering numerous awards.
Kiratii expressed that Perry’s departure marked “the closing of a significant chapter in our lives,” also mentioning “we are all fortunate to have known him and his memory will forever remain etched in our hearts.” With another Shrek film coming soon, this sentiment rings true.
‘Shrek’ is Finally Returning for a Fifth Movie
Originally, it appeared that Perry’s impact on the Shrek series would conclude with “Shrek Forever After”, but now, it seems that the boisterous character he inspired will reappear alongside the usual cast members in a new installment of the franchise, which was announced last year. With Murphy lending his voice to Donkey once more and Mike Myers taking on the role of Shrek again, Cameron Diaz is set to portray Fiona.
The sequel to the much-loved animated movie “Shrek” is set to arrive in 2026, after a long wait of 16 years. While details about the plot are scarce, fans are eagerly anticipating another round of laughter. Production on the film has been underway since discussions began in 2014, but delays due to actors’ schedules, pandemics, and strikes have extended the process longer than expected. The new installment will honor Perry, a beloved character who has played an essential role in the Shrek franchise.
