As a long-time horror enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of body-bending films, I must say I’m thrilled about Nikyatu Jusu taking the reins for the return of The Fly. With her impressive background in creating chilling horror masterpieces like Nanny and Suicide by Sunlight, I can only imagine what she has in store for us with this iconic franchise.
In a chilling turn of events, the terrifying monster from the horror movie “The Fly” will make its comeback. David Cronenberg’s 1986 film, titled “The Fly,” transformed heartthrob Jeff Goldblum into a repulsive, oozing insect, leaving even the most ardent fans squirming in their seats. A modern take on the original 1958 “The Fly” is currently being developed, with it being reported that Nikyatu Jusu, director of “Nanny,” is working on a new film set within the world of The Fly.
The upcoming movie, penned and helmed by Jusu, is being produced by 20th Century Studios and Chernin Entertainment. Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping from Chernin Entertainment are the producers. Although specifics about the storyline remain undisclosed, it has been hinted that the film will not rehash the 1989 original but instead present a fresh narrative set within the universe of Cronenberg’s film, according to Deadline’s reliable sources.
Jusu is a rising star in the horror genre, boasting credits such as the 2022 horror drama “Nanny,” which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance’s U.S. Dramatic Competition and was subsequently acquired by Amazon Studios and Blumhouse. This film gained significant popularity within the horror community. Currently, Jusu is working on a new project for Jordan Peele’s production company Monkeypaw and Universal, though the title has yet to be disclosed. Interestingly, the director has hinted that this upcoming film will delve deeper into her 2019 short film “Suicide by Sunlight.” Moreover, Jusu has been tapped to direct the sequel to the horror classic “Night of the Living Dead.
The Fly Remains a Body Horror Masterpiece
Enthusiasts should be eager for Jusu’s film “The Fly” due to the potential of even more intense, raw practical body-horror effects. With movies like Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance” earning over $43M globally and winning a Cannes award, it’s clear that audiences have a soft spot for body horror in films. Lately, horror movies have pushed the boundaries of these effects to the extreme, such as in Chris Nash’s “In A Violent Nature,” which is filled with prolonged body-horror sequences. With the director of “Nanny” stepping into this franchise famed for its body horror and practical effects, the future of this genre appears promising.
In 1958 and 1986, films delved into the unsettling transformation process that some might label as grisly, with the latter offering a more detailed portrayal, featuring Goldblum depicting grotesque scenes such as removing his fingernails and skin. Modern filmmakers have honed their practical effects skills significantly since then, and I believe Jusu could push boundaries with her interpretation of this franchise. The idea of a human morphing into an insect presents numerous avenues for creativity and is overdue for a contemporary reinterpretation. Here’s hoping we can handle what Jusu has planned!
