As a seasoned gamer of reality TV shows, I must say that the concept of “The Golden Bachelor” and now “The Golden Bachelorette” has always intrigued me. However, as I approach my golden years, I find myself questioning the production’s understanding of what constitutes a comfortable living situation for our more mature counterparts.
When ABC chose to extend the reality show franchise of “The Bachelor” to highlight romance among an older demographic, many wondered how “The Golden Bachelor” would vary from the original series. Would the contestants in their 60s and 70s on Gerry Turner’s season be required to share living quarters? Would they endure the same extended shooting schedules as their younger counterparts? It appears that the response is affirmative. As we edge closer to the debut of “The Golden Bachelorette” in the 2024 TV lineup, Joan Vassos and her cast have been discussing sleeping arrangements, and it seems more like a dreadful experience than a romantic journey.
Joan Vassos, initially seen on Gerry Turner’s Bachelor season, previously developed a connection but had to depart early due to an unexpected family issue. Now, she returns as the star of ‘The Golden Bachelorette’, confessing that sleep was scarce during filming. As per her statement to EW:
The days stretch into nights for me, often lasting from early morning till late at night. I might begin as early as 7 or 8 a.m., occasionally not returning home until 2 a.m… As long as I’m active during the day, I manage fine. However, if I rest even briefly, I feel drained. Yesterday was our day off, and I spent it lounging by the pool, taking naps here and there. It was quite refreshing.
Joan Vassos admitted she managed to sleep for just five hours every night despite filming reportedly having shorter production days than on “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette,” and by arranging local dates to combat travel exhaustion. (Given the treatment of the contestants on “Golden,” it certainly raises questions about what extreme sleep deprivation might be endured by the younger cast members!)
Many people, including Joan Vassos, are finding it difficult to get a decent night’s sleep. In fact, EW interviewed some of her potential partners about the Bachelor Mansion bunk beds, with one describing the experience as reminiscent of his college days – but not in a favorable sense. He expressed this sentiment by saying:
The Bachelor Mansion is reminiscent of a dormitory for fraternity members. Since my college days, I haven’t shared a room with multiple males again. It brings back memories of men who snore loudly and those who perform various bodily functions during their sleep.
I strongly dislike the fact that the contestants on the Golden show aren’t given suitable and age-appropriate sleeping arrangements. Placing septuagenarians in bunk beds? Absolutely not! It’s unacceptable. A 6-foot-5 contestant from Joan Vassos’ season even expressed gratitude for getting a twin bed instead of a bunk, but it was too small, with his feet hanging off. Executive producer Bennett Graebner admitted the difficulty in obtaining adequate rest, stating:
As a gamer, let me tell you, battling those snoring monsters at night has reached epic levels! I’ve been employing every trick in the book – from potions (sleep aids) to enchantments (techniques), trying to conquer this challenge.
It’s clear that I’m not thrilled with the cast of “The Golden Bachelorette.” It seems challenging for anyone to think clearly about their future under such circumstances. Yet, I find myself drawn to following Joan Vassos’ journey, despite my reservations about her season and the bitter aftertaste left by “The Golden Bachelor’s” quick divorce.
On Wednesday, September 18th at 8 PM Eastern Time, the latest reality show spin-off from Bachelor Nation will air on ABC. If you miss it, don’t worry! You can catch up the following day by subscribing to Hulu and streaming it then.
