2024’s Golden Globe Awards, led by host Nikki Glaser, took place on a Sunday night this year. Despite some unexpected outcomes, the award ceremony did get one aspect correct – it was filled with Ricky Gervais-like humor that was both amusing and awkwardly funny. Overall, it was an enjoyable event. As usual, the glamorous evening featured some of the most anticipated films of 2024, such as “Dune: Part Two,” “Wicked,” “A Complete Unknown,” and “The Substance,” among others. While some nominated films were box office successes, others flew under the radar but left critics spellbound. Regardless, every film presented at this year’s Golden Globes deserved its recognition.

In 2024, films like “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked” were among the highest-earning at the box office, accumulating nearly $1.4 billion collectively. However, during awards season, these earnings aren’t always the deciding factor. For instance, movies such as “The Brutalist”, “Anora”, “September 5”, and “Emilie Pérez” received nominations but only generated a combined box office of just over $33 million, mostly due to “Anora”. Although some of these films are yet to be widely released, it’s unlikely they’ll match the success of their nominated counterparts. Despite this, every film and performance that was nominated deserved recognition. However, one award stood out as particularly deserving. Fortunately, the Golden Globes took this into account and awarded the winner who truly deserved it.

Who Are This Year’s Golden Globe Nominees?

2024 was an exceptional year for cinema, as the nominees this year truly represented the best that it had to offer. It goes without saying that it was a remarkable year in film. The performances of those nominated were thoroughly deserving across the board, and the films competing in both Best Picture categories were equally impressive.

In the Best Picture – Musical or Comedy category, the nominees are Anora, Challengers, Emilie Pérez, A Real Pain, The Substance, and Wicked.

On the other hand, the Best Picture – Drama category includes The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Nickel Boys, and September 5.

Alongside those nominations were remarkable acting performances from various films, such as Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce, and Felicity Jones for “The Brutalist”, Mikey Madison and Yura Borisov in “Anora”, Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini in “Conclave”, and Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, and Karla Sofía Gascón in “Emilia Pérez”. Unsurprisingly, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were nominated for their outstanding performances in “Wicked”, while Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley stunned audiences with their performances in “The Substance”.

Among the performances that received nominations, several actors and actresses were part of films not recognized for Best Picture. These included Angelina Jolie in “Maria”, Nicole Kidman in “Babygirl”, Kate Winslet in “Lee”, Amy Adams in “Nightbitch”, Colman Domingo in “Sing Sing”, Jesse Plemons in “Kinds of Kindness”, Glen Powell in “Hit Man”, and Sebastian Stan in “A Different Man”. Interestingly, some actors like Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya were in multiple films nominated this year. However, their exceptional performances in “Dune: Part Two” were not recognized. Instead, Chalamet was recognized for his role as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown”, while Zendaya was nominated for her electrifying performance in “Challengers”.

Following several decades in her profession, Demi Moore finally won a Golden Globe for her exceptional role in “The Substance”, which was an unexpected delight. In her acceptance speech, the actress admitted that she had once considered quitting acting. Thirty years ago, a producer dismissed her as just a “popcorn actress”. Convinced awards were not meant for her, Moore felt ready to retire. However, upon receiving the script for “The Substance”, she chose to take a gamble. Now, after the recent ceremony, it’s evident that Moore deserves every ounce of recognition she receives.

Who Were Some of This Year’s Golden Globes Winners and Snubs?

Year after year, there have been a mix of deserved victories along with some disappointing omissions. This time around, the winners didn’t exactly shock anyone. Emilie Pérez scooped up the award for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, even though Anora was widely anticipated to win. On the other hand, The Brutalist claimed the prize for Best Picture – Drama, despite many predicting otherwise. Kieran Culkin triumphed for his performance in A Real Pain, Zoe Saldaña was recognized for her versatile acting in Emilia Pérez, Adrien Brody won for his role in The Brutalist, and Sebastian Stan bagged the award for his work in A Different Man. All these wins were largely anticipated by viewers.

During the awards ceremony, Brady Corbet was named Best Director for “The Brutalist,” and Peter Straughan won Best Screenplay for “Conclave.” However, many had predicted that Sean Baker would win for “Anora.” Instead, Fernanda Torres unexpectedly took home an award for her performance in “I’m Still Here,” a role many thought would go to Nicole Kidman in “Babygirl.” Although there were several individual surprises, the overall outcome of the ceremony was mostly in line with expectations, with the most notable exception being the lack of recognition for “Anora.
