2025 has been quite delightful for fans of the timeless classic “When Harry Met Sally…”. In the early months of that year, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, the iconic duo from the 1989 romantic comedy, reappeared in a Super Bowl ad for Hellmann’s Mayonnaise. Later, they graced the stage together at the 2025 Academy Awards to announce the Best Picture winner, “Anora”. A few weeks afterwards, I managed to get my hands on a VHS tape of the movie, allowing me to watch it again after many years.
For the first time, I watched the clever and thought-provoking classic “When Harry Met Sally…” by director Rob Reiner and writer Nora Ephron. In my perspective as a movie reviewer, “When Harry Met Sally…” is a captivating film that chronicles the transformative journey of two main characters from mutual disdain to deep friendship and, ultimately, passionate love spanning over a decade. The narrative is interspersed with documentary-style vignettes where married couples share their own meeting stories, culminating in Harry and Sally recounting theirs. Except for the concluding anecdote, these tales are rooted in reality.
In an extra feature on a DVD, Reiner shares that the scenes between characters in the interstitials are acted out, but the tales they narrate were gathered by Ephron. She interviewed actual couples about their romantic encounters, known as “meet-cutes”, and wove these recollections into her script. The concept for these segments came to Reiner after he asked Alan Horn’s father how he had met “Mrs. Horn”. He was visibly excited at the chance to discuss this. Everything took a different turn for him when he found love while working on the film “When Harry Met Sally…”. On an episode of The Late Late Show in 2016, Reiner shared that after meeting his wife, Michele Singer, he and Ephron chose to give Harry and Sally the heartwarming ending that would be cherished by audiences for years to come.
