This week on SYFY, The Goonies is a timeless classic for numerous reasons, with one major factor being the immense talent behind it. Beyond the young stars like Sean Astin, Ke Huy Quan, Corey Feldman, and Josh Brolin, there were heavyweights such as Richard Donner directing, Chris Columbus penning the script, and of course, Steven Spielberg contributing not only to the writing but also producing the film.
Working with Steven Spielberg during the 1980s, when he was already renowned for movies like “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” was a significant advantage for any project. However, Quan claims that Spielberg wasn’t merely a filmmaking titan on set. He was also known for his playful pranks, often pulling jokes on friends who visited the set.
For More on Ke Huy Quan
After Years of Martial Arts Training, Ke Huy Quan Makes His Return as an Action Star in Love Hurts, a New Film
The original star of The Goonies, Ke Huy Quan, is finally making his comeback as a leading action star in the new film Love Hurts. After years of training in martial arts, Quan’s expertise and skills are showcased throughout the movie. This marks a significant milestone for the actor who has been waiting for this opportunity to use his abilities in an action role.
That time Steven Spielberg pranked Harrison Ford on the set of The Goonies
During a recent conversation with The Guardian, Quan shared an anecdote about the day when Harrison Ford, famed from both Star Wars and Indiana Jones, dropped by the set of The Goonies. Being that Quan had previously worked with Ford on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, he was undeniably excited to welcome his former colleague among the young cast members. Additionally, it was a delight for him since Spielberg, his friend and collaborator, was also present on set.
However, instead of what they initially planned, Spielberg apparently had different visions in mind. As per Quan, the renowned filmmaker bought hundreds of copies of a unique book, distributed one to each crew member, and ensured that Ford was also privy to it.
Quan stated that Spielberg had pulled a significant prank on him. It seemed there was a biography about him that Spielberg disliked intensely, so Steven decided to buy approximately 300 copies. When Harrison arrived at the set and walked in, security personnel, lighting crew members, camera equipment handlers, everyone he encountered were all reading that very biography.
In a clever twist, Spielberg found himself tricked using the very set of “The Goonies,” an incident likely not to be the last between the two pranksters. This fun fact is just one more reason to appreciate “The Goonies” as an iconic adventure from the 1980s. And every time you rewatch it, remember that Harrison Ford was once playfully fooled on this same set.
