In 2023, the demise of the actor playing Baylan Skoll presented a challenging predicament for the Star Wars series on Disney+, as his captivating portrayal significantly contributed to the show’s success. The decision about who would replace him in such iconic footsteps had been left unanswered, until recently when it was disclosed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor previously known for his role as The Hound in Game of Thrones is set to transition from wielding a sword to wielding a lightsaber, taking on the character of Baylan Skoll.
Information regarding Season 2 of Ahsoka has been scarce from Disney and Lucasfilm. With several other Star Wars shows not getting renewed for a second season, the gap between the release of Season 1 in 2023 and no news on Season 2 had many fans questioning if it might be next to be canceled. However, interviews with industry figures like Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy have confirmed that Ahsoka’s Season 2 is not going to vanish without a trace.
Although an official start date for the new season’s filming hasn’t been announced yet, hints suggest it might be April this year. However, Filoni mentioned towards the end of 2024 that the scripts are still being refined. Given the underwhelming response to many recent Star Wars shows, such as Ahsoka with a modest 64% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, there’s likely a strong emphasis on making this return a successful one and avoiding any potential crashes in the storyline.
Replacing Ray Stevenson Is Going to Be Challenging
Fans often develop strong feelings for characters, even when they’re portrayed as villains. For instance, Baylon Skoll, played exceptionally by Rosario Dawson, was praised as a standout highlight of the first season, despite criticisms about a lackluster storyline, unimpressive dialogue, and other recurring issues that are now synonymous with the Star Wars franchise.
Filling Stevenson’s central role was expected to be challenging, but McCann demonstrated his suitability by portraying a character remarkably similar to Stevenson in the role of The Hound on Game of Thrones. Initially portrayed as an adversary in the series, The Hound, or Sandor Clegane, evolved from a potentially violent and fearsome antagonist towards characters like the Starks, into a kind-hearted, honorable figure that won over viewers, particularly through his relationships with Arya Stark.
The new character has a good chance of winning over viewers just like Skoll did for McCann, making him an ideal choice for Stevenson’s successor in the upcoming series. We’ll find out if he can wield a lightsaber as skillfully as a sword and carry on the character’s legacy in a manner that pleases fans only when the show eventually premieres. Unfortunately, there’s no definite timeline for its release, so we might have to be patient to see how everything unfolds.
